Liverpool were handed another huge boost in the race for the English Premier League title after Manchester United stunned derby rivals Manchester City 2-1.

Jurgen Klopp’s side opened up an 11-point gap at the summit with victory over Bournemouth before defending champions City failed to keep the pressure on in the evening kick-off.

Marcus Rashford steered United ahead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute after VAR adjudged that he was fouled in the box by Bernardo Silva. And after the England striker clipped the crossbar, fit-again Anthony Martial squeezed an effort under Ederson six minutes later.

City searched for a way back into the match in the second half, scoring through substitute Nicolas Otamendi five minutes from time, but they slipped 14 points off top spot.

Klopp admitted Liverpool had enjoyed the perfect afternoon at Bournemouth after cruising to a comfortable 3-0 win.

Klopp said a commanding victory was the ideal preparation for their Champions League visit to Salzburg, where a point will guarantee the European champions passage into the last 16 of the competition.

In control of the game by half-time after goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah killed off any hopes Bournemouth had of fighting back with the third in the second half.

“Yes, it was (perfect), 100 percent,” said the manager.

“We scored wonderful goals, we had more chances and did really well and we were really uncomfortable to play against.

“From 3-0 on we controlled the game absolutely. The players didn’t like it too much, they wanted to be really loud in these moments but I didn’t want to see any unnecessary risk. It was maybe not the most exciting but necessary.”

Liverpool’s cross-town rivals Everton reaped immediate rewards from a managerial change by beating Chelsea 3-1 to move out of the relegation places.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s brace helped Everton end a three-match Premier League losing run that led to Marco Silva’s sacking earlier in the week.

Brazilian Richarlison headed the Toffees into a fifth-minute lead which Calvert- Lewin doubled early in the second half.

Mateo Kovacic pulled one back for Chelsea before Calvert-Lewin’s second settled matters six minutes from time.

Tottenham bounced back from their midweek defeat at Manchester United by thrashing Burnley 5-0.

Harry Kane was at the double for Spurs.

Harry Kane scored twice to take his league tally for the campaign to nine and Son Heung-min made a claim for goal of the season with a brilliant individual solo effort for the north Londoners.

New Watford manager Nigel Pearson was in the stands at Vicarage Road for the home game with Crystal Palace.

Interim head coach Hayden Mullins was in charge the final time as the two sides fought out a 0-0 draw.

The Hornets have failed to find the net nine times in 16 top flight matches this season, and Pearson’s side are six points from safety.
