Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been honoured at the London Football Awards, with the Chelsea striker being named the England capital’s FA Women’s Super League player of the year.

Only clubs and players based in London are eligible for the awards, with Kerr ensuring the women’s award stayed with Chelsea after it was won last year by her club teammate Fran Kirby.

Kerr has scored nine goals in 11 WSL appearances this season and has found the back of net 18 times in 22 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, who sit second on the WSL ladder behind London rivals Arsenal.

Kerr’s Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was also recognised, with her years of “exceptional work and achievement” earning her the outstanding contribution to London football award.

Other Chelsea winners were Edouard Mendy (goalkeeper of the year), and Conor Gallagher (young player of the year), who is on loan at Crystal Palace.
