Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been recognised for a stellar 12 months by being short-listed for the FIFA best women’s player of the year award.
The Chelsea star is one of 14 players nominated for the award, with the candidates also including last year’s winner, Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas.
Kerr’s achievements in 2022 including winning the English Women’s Super League Golden Boot for a second straight season, being named the English PFA’s players’ player of the year and claiming the WSL-FA Cup double with Chelsea.
Kerr, who was runner-up in the award last year to Putellas, wasn’t the only Australian nominated for a Best FIFA Football Award, with former Central Coast Mariners prodigy Alou Kuol, the older brother of teenage Socceroos sensation Garang Kuol, in contention for the Puskas Award for the goal of the year.
Kuol’s “scorpion kick” for the Australian under-23 team against Iraq’s under-23 side secured him a nomination.
Heading the list for FIFA’s best men’s player of the year is Argentine great and 2022 World Cup winner Lionel Messi, but Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo failed to receive a nomination.
Best FIFA player nominations:
Men: Julian Alvarez, Jude Bellingham, Karim Benzema, Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Achraf Hakimi, Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mane, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Luka Modric, Neymar, Mohamed Salah, Vinicius Junior.
Women: Aitana Bonmati, Debinha, Jessie Fleming, Ada Hegerberg, Sam Kerr, Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema, Alex Morgan, Lena Oberdorf, Alexandra Popp, Alexia Putellas, Wendie Renard, Keira Walsh, Leah Williamson.
