It’s one small step for football in south-west Sydney, and one giant leap for… whatever their new club is to be called.

The A-League’s newest entity will have its name and colours unveiled on Wednesday, after months of surveys to gauge local sentiment.

Given the working title Macarthur & South West United since the merger of two bids to form a winning consortium, the new club won’t enter the A-League until the season after next but is moving ahead with significant milestones.

A fortnight after former A-League boss Archie Fraser was appointed CEO, the name and colours will be unveiled at sold-out lunch in Campbelltown attended by 600 curious fans and local business people.

“We started on this in the week after we won the bid last November and put things out there for people to give an opinion on,” said co-chairman Gino Marra.

“The survey ran for two and a half months, and we had responses directly and on social media – in the end about 4000 people completed it.

“We had a lot of strong names to choose from – but the one we chose featured in 70-75 per cent of responses, either on its own or in combination. So it was very easy to make a final decision.

“Similarly, the colours we went with have at least one in 95 per cent of responses. So we’re confident the name and colours reflect what people believe in.

“The lunch to launch it all has been an interesting exercise. The big business that I expectedto jump on board largely hasn’t it, and instead we’ve had a lot of interest from small and medium-sized businesses.”
