EUROPEAN champions Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Mexican international striker Javier Hernandez on a season-long loan from Manchester United, while fellow Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck is off to Arsenal.

Manchester City, meanwhile, has surprised with a loan move to Valencia.

“Real Madrid and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the loan of Javier Hernandez, who will be tied to the club for this season” the Spanish club said in a statement.

“Real Madrid reserves the option to buy the player.”

Hernandez becomes Real’s fourth signing of the transfer window after the arrivals of World Cup stars James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Keylor Navas and will be paraded at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday (EST).

The 26-year-old scored 59 goals in 152 appearances for United over the past four seasons, but had fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford even before the English side reportedly sealed a sensational loan deal for Colombian hitman Radamel Falcao.

He is expected to provide cover for first-choice centre forward Karim Benzema after the departure of the Frenchman’s previous understudy Alvaro Morata to Juventus in June.

However, there has been widespread discontent in the Spanish media at the lack of a replacement for midfielders Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso, who were sold to Manchester United and Bayern Munich respectively last week.

Madrid suffered a shock 4-2 defeat over the weekendaway at Real Sociedad having blown an early 2-0 lead with both coach Carlo Ancelotti and captain Iker Casillas questioning the players’ attitude.

Hernandez was a revelation in his first season in England as he scored 20 times in 45 appearances as United won the Premier League for a 19th time.

However, after a quieter second season he found starting opportunities hard to come by as United splashed out to pair Netherlands captain Robin van Persie with Wayne Rooney in attack.

Meanwhile, Arsenal has bolstered its attacking options by signing Danny Welbeck from Premier League rival Manchester United.

The England forward joined the London club for a reported 16 million pounds ($27 million) as the summer transfer window was closing on Monday.

The need for Arsene Wenger to sign a striker came after Olivier Giroud was ruled out until at least the end of December with a broken left leg.

Meanwhile, Valencia signed striker Alvaro Negredo from English champion Manchester City moments before the close of the transfer market on Monday.

Valencia said City agreed to loan Negredo to the Spanish club, with the deal including what it called an “obligatory” option to later buy the player.

Valencia made the announcement on the stroke of midnight local time as the summer transfer window closed. It did not disclose the financial details of the deal.

Negredo is recovering from a broken right foot he suffered in a preseason game in July.

The 29-year-old Negredo joined City last summer from Sevilla on a deal reportedly worth 20 million pounds (then $30 million), but after a promising start his production of goals waned as the season wore on.

He scored 23 goals in 49 appearances for City, helping it win the Premier League and League Cup.

He was also part of Spain’s European championship squad in 2012.

Negredo is the first high-profile player Valencia has brought in since Singapore tycoon Peter Lim bought the club. He will join Paco Alcacer and new arrival Rodrigo Moreno in attack.
