Australia’s Matildas are already one of the country’s most popular sporting outfits, but that adulation is reaching a whole new level at this year’s Women’s World Cup.

With the global showpiece event being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, fans are having their best opportunity ever to watch Sam Kerr’s Aussie side in prime time.

In total, 32 teams contested this year’s event, with the top two nations from each of the eight groups progressing to the knockout rounds. The round of 16 started on August 5, with the final set for Sunday, 20 August at 8pm AEST.

Who will win the Women’s World Cup?

Home fans would like to say Australia and while the Aussies do have an outside chance and the help of captain Kerr, one of the world’s great strikers, it would be a surprise. The Matildas crashed out in the quarter-finals of their most recent tournament, the 2022 Asian Cup. We think a semi-final showing would be incredible for the co-hosts.

Two-time defending champions the United States were the hot favourite to win a third consecutive title, something no country’s male or female team has achieved in World Cup history. But they were sent packing in a round of 16 defeat to Sweden. The fallout to the loss by the American team has been brutal.

We originally opted for 2022 European Championship runner-up Germany to go one step further in Australia and take out the title and they promptly failed to get out of their group. So we’ll leave the predictions from here and just salute a Women’s World Cup breaking all sorts of records.
