Brisbane Roar defender Daniel Bowles has plans to expand his cafe empire after retiring from football at just 28.
In a senior career spanning nine seasons and three clubs, Bowles made 114 A-League appearances for the Roar, Adelaide United and Gold Coast United.
Despite the potential of playing on for several more years, the Toowoomba product said the time was right to concentrate on his business interests and spend more time with his wife Hannah and their one-year-old son Leo.
Bowles already owns two cafes in Brisbane and has bold plans for more.
“I love cooking, I love food, I love coffee, I love making coffee and love business,” he said.
“It’s a competitive world as well, and I have that competitive nature, and I guess it just all ties in together.
“With my family, it’s time to start the next chapter in our lives, which is away from football.
“I’m not saying that in a couple of years I won’t play in a local league, but for the foreseeable future I’ll be away from football.”

Bowles, who has had to say goodbye from a quarantine hotel where he is locked down with his teammates after their return from NSW, said he “loved every minute” of his A-League career, including his time in Brisbane.
“Going into training every day to be with the boys, it felt like home. It’s such a great group of players,” he said.
“This year we had a much better season than last. We could have gone the whole way, and there’s a great bunch of young players coming through as well.”
