INTERIM boss Carl Veart says he has done enough to become Adelaide United’s permanent coach, regardless of whether the Reds play finals football this season.

Unbeaten in four matches since Veart took over from departed Dutchman Gertjan Verbeek, the Reds know that even a win over Melbourne City on Tuesday night may not be enough to secure them a top six berth

But regardless of the result, Veart is a strong chance of losing the interim tag and being named as Verbeek’s official successor for the 2020-21 season starting in December.

When asked if he felt he done what was required to be offered the job on a permanent basis, the former Socceroos striker replied “Yes.”

“Coming into this hub I said I would like the job full-time going out of it,” Veart said.

“I know it’s just not on the performances, there’s a lot more to it. The club are looking to go in a new direction with the whole club.

“There’s a lot more to it than just the results that we’re getting here in the hub at the moment.”

Veart said he was having the “best time of my life” since taking over at the Reds.

“I haven't been this happy for a long time. I’m really enjoying it,” he said.

“There’s nothing better than going in and being in charge of 21 young players that want to succeed and give it their best effort every time they train and every time they play.

“There’s nothing more you can ask for as a coach.”

But that joy may turn to disappointment if Reds fail to reach the top six.

A win over Melbourne City at ANZ Stadium would life Adelaide to 38 points, the target Veart had set his side before entering the hub when they were on 27 points.

As little as 35 points was enough to get Brisbane Roar into the top six just two years ago when each team played 27 regular season matches rather than the 26 they are playing this season.

“It would be difficult (to miss out on the finals),” Veart said.

“I’m more than happy for what the boys have put in so far and if it’s not enough, there’s not much more we can do.”

Melbourne City can guarantee themselves second spot with a win over the Reds.

But they will have to do so without skipper and former Adelaide fullback Scott Jamieson, who has returned to Melbourne for the birth of his first child.

City coach Erick Mombearts is all but resigned to being without Jamieson for rest of the season, including the final series, due to the 14-day quarantine period he would have to serve if he returned to NSW
