Western Sydney Wanderers go for three straight wins against Perth Glory after easing past Adelaide
For the sake of that ‘winning feeling’, Markus Babbel has urged his resurgent Western Sydney Wanderers players to build momentum and finish the A-League campaign with no regrets.
Finals are all but a pipe dream, but it won’t stop Western Sydney playing for pride against runaway A-League leaders Perth Glory this weekend.
The eighth-placed Wanderers threw out the form guide on Saturday night, easing past fourth-placed Adelaide 3-1 in a gutsy performance at the usually fruitless Coopers Stadium.
It gave Markus Babbel’s side their fourth win of the season and the first back-to-back victories in a year.
Babbel conceded a finals berth is still effectively - if not mathematically - impossible, given sixth-placed Wellington Phoenix sit 12 points ahead with eight rounds remaining.
But for the sake of that “winning feeling”, Babbel urged his men to build momentum and finish the campaign with no regrets.
That begins at Spotless Stadium on Sunday, where they’ll face former coach Tony Popovic and his Glory side that disposed of Brisbane Roar 4-0 for their 10th unbeaten match.
“If I play a game I want to win,” Babbel said.
“I said last week before the Central Coast that we can’t give 10 games up now; of course we can’t finish (in the) six but we still have 10 games to go - before Adelaide was nine games.
“We still want to get results, this is also fair play to the other teams ... want to have competition on the pitch and we want to try to get a result.
“Now it’s two top results against Central Coast and Adelaide. Keep going now, because there’s so many games to go and we want to improve.”
Adelaide boss Marco Kurz described the Wanderers as ”cleverer” against a quicker and physically stronger Reds outfit.
Roly Bonevacia, who was the subject of a racial slur on his last visit to the venue, was the Wanderers’ best, setting up Oriol Riera’s opener, scoring the second and assisting Abraham Majok’s third.
“It’s important if you have so may young guys on your pitch you need the older ones there, and Roly was there,” Babbel said.
“To be fair, I expect this from him because he’s a good player. He had a fantastic performance, not only because he scored a goal but also how he was working against the ball.
“Him and Ori did a fantastic job defensive wise also, and that’s what we need.”
