Robbie Cornthwaite’s emotional’ move to Malaysia, and an awkward Mariners mix-up

A-LEAGUE CONFIDENTIAL: Robbie Cornthwaite’s emotional decision to quit the Wanderers, an awkward Mariners mix-up and Seb Ryall’s fresh start.

THERE were many things on the mind of Robbie Cornthwaite when he signed for Malaysian side Perak FA this week, for this was a move with rather more emotion attached than most.

Cutting short his 18-month stint with Western Sydney, Cornthwaite elected to accept the contract offer at Perak and return to the country where he played for 18 months from 2015 — and the country where he and his wife Nel went through the agony of losing their second child, Minnie, when she was born prematurely at 22 weeks in 2016.

CLEAN-OUT: Cornthwaite denies he was forced out

In two months’ time, Nel is due to give birth again, a period that would be fraught with emotion in any event. But his transfer means the couple have to decide whether she will join him in Malaysia for the birth, or stay in Australia.

Cornthwaite has already spoken movingly of the pain he and Nel went through, keen for the topic to become less taboo and raising funds to support parents going through such an experience.

“It will be an emotional time, but for my wife even more than me,” Cornthwaite told Confidential. “It’ll be up to her where she feels most comfortable, but we know there’s great medical facilities in Malaysia, some very hospitals.”

MARINERS MIX-UP

THERE could be a few awkward moments at Mariners training when new signing Peter Skapetis joins in, because Skapetis was signed as a replacement for Josh Bingham.

Bingham’s agent contacted the Mariners last week to say he had a deal for the player in Malaysia, and asking the club to release him. Reluctantly they agreed, and lined up Skapetis as a replacement, but couldn’t then get hold of Bingham’s agent to finalise his exit.

So club officials rang Bingham to say that the paperwork for his move was ready — except the player had no idea a move to Malaysia was even in the offing. The immediate consequence was an angry exchange with his agent, and Mariners officials have spent the time since trying to allay Bingham’s concerns he’s not wanted.

SEB’S NEW START

THERE’S been plenty of speculation regarding Seb Ryall’s shock decision to quit football indefinitely, but we hear the Sydney FC defender was simply driven by a desire to see the world.

Having spent more than a decade playing professionally, the 28-year-old is keen to travel with friends and enjoy what he’s missed out on during the years football was his focus.

There were attempts to talk him out of his decision but Ryall, who has always been media-shy, was keen to forgo the remainder of his contract and leave mid-season. Though he’s been a bench player for the last couple of seasons, there isn’t believed to be any animosity; he simply became disillusioned with the game.

GERSBACH LOOKING FOR NEW HOME

AFTER reportedly being the subject of inquiries by French club Lens, Alex Gersbach has now been linked with a move to English Championship club Barnsley.

The Socceroos defender, who has been in China with the Olyroos, is believed to be looking for a move away from Rosenborg. Gersbach has made 15 appearances for his Norwegian club, but is desperate for more game time in order to secure a seat on the plane to Russia.

THE A-League clubs fired off a letter to FIFA this week, demanding that the working party to settle the long-running Congress dispute get moving, with sign of the promised FIFA visitation. We hear the letter was fairly explicit about those running FFA, which is no great surprise.

OLD ROOS HELP PICK NEW BOSS

WE may be a step closer to knowing who the new Socceroos coach will be, but not everyone has been pleased with the process. We hear Mark Schwarzer, who FFA appointed to an advisory panel along with former Socceroos Mark Bresciano and Stan Lazaridis, almost walked away from the role having disagreed with the direction the search for a candidate was heading. Schwarzer, with contacts all over Europe, is believed to have been contacted directly by several high-profile coaches when the position first became vacant, including Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce.

DIGITAL SKY BLUE SIGNING

SYDNEY FC players were introduced to their new teammate at training on Thursday. Mark Brijeski, the “highly acclaimed” e-Sports competitor, will represent the Sky Blues in the newly E-League, which begins next month. On his arrival at training, Brijeski was immediately challenged to a game by Michael Zullo, Jordy Buijs and Charles Lokolingoy.
