SYDNEY A-League expansion bids South-West Sydney FC and United for Macarthur have officially joined forces to fight for one of two new spots from 2019-20.
In a move set to cement the battle lines with key regional rival Southern Expansion, the two hopefuls will utilise their shared territory and desire to use an upgraded Campbelltown Stadium as their home ground.
South-West Sydney FC chair Gino Marra and United for Macarthur chair Chris Redman will co-chair the bid with support from ambassadors Brett Emerton and Nick Carle.
It’s understood billionaire property developer Lang Walker, who had already pledged to financially back the Macarthur bid, will transfer his support to the merger, which hopes to become Sydney’s third A-League club alongside Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.
The team’s name and colours will be decided after consultation with the local community next month.
The joint bid - and eight other hopefuls - has 10 days left to finalise and submit their documents in time for the August 31 deadline, with Football Federation Australia expected to announce two new teams in October.
“One bid, one focus, one club representing the entire community makes sense,” Redman said.
“We’re stronger together and we’re all delighted with this outcome.”
