$75m Liverpool gun’s humiliating ‘miss of the season’ contender

This Liverpool star had an absolute nightmare in front of goal, somehow missing an open net from just three metres out.

Liverpool went top of the Premier League ladder with a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, but one striker won’t want to watch a replay of the game after his stunning miss of the season contender.

While Sadio Mane extended his Premier League record with a 43rd-minute goal against Palace for a remarkable ninth-straight game, his fellow Reds forward Diogo Jota should have broken the deadlock six minutes earlier.

Thiago flew into the box to get on the end of a Jordan Henderson cross and powered a header towards goal, but it was well saved by Palace gloveman Guaita. It bounced to £40 million (AUD$75 million) signing Jota barely two metres from goal. But instead of tapping the ball into the net, he put his laces through the ball, volleying it with all the power of a rampaging bull – but straight over the bar.

Former England defender Michael Dawson was astounded at the miss, speaking on Sky Sports.

“I don’t actually know how he’s missed Jeff,” he said.

“It’s on the right-hand side, they’re getting lots of crosses into the box, Sadio Mane sets up Jordan Henderson and he crosses it.

“Thiago then wins the header, it’s saved and it comes to Jota from four yards out, Guaita goes to close it but he blazes it over! I don’t know how he’s missed it, I really don’t.”

Incredible.

Luckily for the 24-year-old, Liverpool went on to win after Mane started the scoring on the brink of halftime, making no mistake from close range after a Salah header from a set-piece routine fell to his feet inside the six-yard box.

His goal overtakes Robin van Persie’s record of eight-straight scoring games in the Premier League against Stoke, while Romelu Lukaku and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank both have seven scoring games against West Ham, as did Olivier Giroud against Aston Villa.

Mane’s goal was his 100th for Liverpool, and moved him to 98 Premier League strikes.
