Stephanie Morton completes track cycling world cup season with dual gold

Adelaide cyclist Stephanie Morgan’s climb to the top of world cycling has continued, this time with two gold medals at the UCI world cup in London.

Stephanie Morton has finished her track cycling world cup season with dual gold in London as she continues her ascension towards the top of the sport.

The Adelaide 28-year-old won the sprint and keirin at the UCI world cup on the weekend which made it eight medals including four gold from four rounds of competition.

She showed genuine speed by topping sprint qualifying at every world cup and set a new PB of 10.484 secs which was the first time she’d been sub 10.5 for the flying 200m.

“It’s been a huge couple of months of racing, so it is nice to finish on a high,” Morton said.

“First keirin gold for me at a world cup, so that’s really special.

“It has been a really successful season and I will definitely soak it up and use that as motivation. I’m now looking forward to getting in some more good training back in Adelaide and getting ready for that final push into the world championships. But, for now, I think I’ve earned myself an extra slice of pavlova at Christmas.”

Morton has won silver in the sprint at the past two world championships but will have her sights set firmly on gold next year when they are held in Poland in February and March.

In other Australian results in London on the weekend, Matthew Glaetzer won silver in the men’s sprint and Amy Cure and Annette Edmondson teamed up to win silver in the madison.

“Today’s sprint competition was the toughest I have ever done,” Glaetzer said.

“After going to three with Jeffrey (Hoogland), I have never been that broken, drained and in pain. I was happy to make the gold ride off but knew I didn’t have much left.”

Australia’s track sprinters will be in action in Adelaide next month at the inaugural Track Down Under on January 11 which forms part of the Tour Down Under festival.
