Weather forces England v Sri Lanka Women’s World T20 game to be cancelled

TROPICAL storms could force the ICC to move Women’s World T20 games away from St Lucia to Caribbean neighbour Antigua at a speculated cost of $US1 million.

England and Sri Lanka shared the points for their opening match of the tournament after the Group A game was abandoned due to heavy rain.

It’s understood the ICC has considered moving the remaining eight games scheduled for the St Lucia venue as more bad weather is forecast.

With the huge price tag as well as the logistical nightmare of relocating five teams to Antigua, which will host the semi-finals and final, it’s understood the plan was viewed as too difficult.

But if the rain continues, the ICC might have no choice but to transfer the games to Antigua’s Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground or face a complete washout of Group A games.

A full washout would see West Indies – who already have points after a victory against Bangladesh in Guyana on Friday night - and second-ranked side England progress to the finals.

Australia is in Group B and has not been affected so far as it is playing in Georgetown, Guyana, on the South American mainland.

The Aussies won their opening clash against Pakistan and meet Ireland on Monday (EDT). The forecast is fine.

“We’re monitoring the situation,” an ICC spokesman said.

“We are suffering from freak weather in the Caribbean and our focus is on getting cricket played.”

It’s believed the ICC needs to make a call by Monday (EDT) to ensure fairness in Group A with matches scheduled for Tuesday (EDT).

St Lucia has been lashed by rain, which has made the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground unplayable.
