Wasim Akram verbally abused, involved in heated confrontation with fan during Australia-India Test in Perth

Cricket legend and commentator Wasim Akram has been berated by a fan for close to an hour, leading to a heated confrontation between the pair outside Optus Stadium.

Cricket Australia and Optus Stadium will ramp up security in Perth after a heated altercation between commentary star Wasim Akram and an abusive fan after play on Saturday.

This masthead understands the fan verbally abused the Pakistan cricket legend for close to an hour after play when Akram was trying to complete his cross for Indian broadcaster Star near the boundary fence at Optus Stadium.

Akram had already signed an autograph for the man inside the venue but the fan would not relent and continued to harass the cricket star, who is beloved by cricket audiences in Australia.

The fan, a young man, was then either waiting for Akram outside the ground or happened to be there when the commentator left the stadium to take a cab.

A heated verbal argument ensued before security intervened and the man continued to remonstrate with security.

He was then taken away by security. It is unknown if the man was intoxicated.

Officials say the abuse was not racist in nature but security arrangements for commentators will now be increased for the rest of the Test as a result of the security breach.

Cricket Australia confirmed an increased security presence will now stand between commentators completing live crosses on the field and fans after play to ensure there is no repeat of the incident.

Commentators are also offered the choice of being picked up by a car inside the venue.

Akram declined to comment when approached by this masthead but played down the severity of the incident and applauded security for their assistance.
