Shane Watson roasted for wardrobe malfunction at Cricket World Cup

Cricket fans have poked fun at Australian great Shane Watson’s unfortunate wardrobe malfunction in the commentary box at the World Cup.

Australian cricket great Shane Watson has been playfully roasted for an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction during the ODI Cricket World Cup.

Over in India on commentary duties for the 50-over showpiece event, Watson was calling Wednesday night’s game between New Zealand and Afghanistan.

The Kiwis won the match by 149 runs to claim their fourth victory of the World Cup and remain on top of the table ahead of India.

But viewers and cricket fans couldn’t take their eyes off Watson, who was sporting a very tight button up shirt in the commentary box.

The all-rounder is best known for being arguably Australia’s best three-format player and having one of the thickest rigs in world cricket — right up there with imposing opener Matthew Hayden and South African legend Jacques Kallis.

But Watson could have done with a bigger sized shirt, as viewers got a glimpse of the 42-year-old’s chest and shirt lining as the buttons hung on for dear life.

A New Zealand cricket fan account wrote on X: “Another big win for the Black Caps overnight but the Player of the Match were the buttons on Shane Watson’s shirt…”

One viewer said: “Can someone get Shane Watson a shirt that fits him?”

A second requested: “Can someone please get Shane Watson a bigger shirt?! Poor fella is running some pretty serious sideboob.

Another added: “Tough day to be Shane Watson’s BUTTONS. That shirt is BURSTING.”

Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham and Will Young all scored half centuries and benefited from dropped catches to score a fighting 288-6.

The Black Caps then ran through Afghanistan, who had shocked defending champions England last time out, for just 139 in 34.4 overs.

Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson took 3-19, spinner Mitchell Santner claimed 3-39 while veteran seamer Trent Boult chipped in with 2-18 as New Zealand turned the screw.

Santner also stunned with an epic one-handed catch that dismissed Hashmatullah Shahidi for eight.

Santner had to backpedal before plucking the catch out of the air with one hand.

Meanwhile, Australia’s quest to win a sixth ODI World Cup is still alive after the Aussies recovered from a shaky start to claim a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka.

The result meant Australia climbed off the bottom of the table, but will need to win close to all of their remaining six games, including against England and Pakistan, to have any hope of making the semifinals.

Australia’s campaign continues when they take on Pakistan in a must win match on Friday night at 7.30pm AEST.
