Rock thrown at Australian cricket team’s bus in Bangladesh

BANGLADESH authorities have beefed up security after an incident where a rock was thrown at the Australian team bus.

BANGLADESH authorities have beefed up security after an incident last night where local kids threw a rock at the Australian team bus.

The projectile didn’t smash through the glass but cracked one of the windows and prompted a swift investigation from Australia’s security unit.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is aware of the report of damage to a window of the Australia Cricket Team’s bus while returning to the hotel from the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong following the end of play on day one of the second Test on Monday.

“The BCB has taken this matter with utmost seriousness and a high-power committee has been formed by the concerned security agencies to investigate and find out the facts,” said the statement.

“The Board has been in constant communication with the Australian Cricket Team management. As added assurance, security measures have been enhanced on the travelling route of the teams. The Australia Cricket Team has expressed its satisfaction and comfort with the security operation in place and has appreciated the response from the BCB and the local authorities following Monday’s incident.”

No players or staff were injured in the incident. Players were understood to be startled by the scare given the heightened level of security but by this morning the mood among the group seemed largely unconcerned.

On the heavily armed convoy to the ground this morning, there was an increased security presence.

“On route back to the hotel last night a window on the Australian team bus was broken. No one was injured in the incident,” said CA’s head of security, Sean Carroll.

“Team security personnel are currently in discussion with local authorities while they investigate the cause, which is believed to have come from a small rock or stone.

“Bangladesh authorities are taking the incident seriously and security has been increased on the route.

“To date we have been happy with the security measures that have been in place and we are comfortable with the response from the Bangladesh authorities and the increased security presence we have been provided in light of the incident.”

Australia have been travelling to the grounds in both Dhaka and Chittagong with extensive levels of security, with a heavily guarded convoy escorting them back and forth.

That security was increased following the rock throwing incident, however, the Australian camp is comfortable the broken window was caused by erroneous youths.

It’s understood local police were interviewing a bunch of local kids this morning, amid reports that they’d been throwing rocks at passing cars and tuk tuks.
