Player ratings: Super Shaun Marsh century cannot get Aussies home

A superb century by Shaun Marsh and a tidy half-century by Marcus Stoinis wasn’t enough to steer home Australia in the third ODI against South Africa, but the signs are promising. EVERY PLAYER RATED

Marsh keeps Australia in it with brilliant ton

Australia has lost its ODI decider against South Africa by 40 runs after failing to chase down a monster total of 321 in Hobart.

South Africa was sent in to bat with an incredible exhibition of hitting from Faf du Plessis and David Miller propelling South Africa to their highest ODI score in Australia and delivering them the series 2-1.

THIRD ODI REWIND: RELIVE ALL THE ACTION

AUSTRALIA

AARON FINCH — 2

Captained beautifully in the first 30 overs before David Miller and opposite number Faf du Plessis ripped the contest away. Disappointing dismissal chipping Lungi Ngidi meekly to mid-on.

CHRIS LYNN — 1

Promoted to opener and lasted just a solitary legitimate delivery before edging behind off Dale Steyn looking to force off the back foot for a golden duck.

SHAUN MARSH — 8

Superb century gave Australians a sniff in the run chase after top order fell apart. Unfortunately was unable to replicate the late order carnage from du Plessis and David Miller to get the side home.

TRAVIS HEAD — 1

Completed a poor series by failing to reach double figures for a third consecutive innings. Absorbed 21 balls before slicing a ball to backward point for six.

MARCUS STOINIS — 7

Took two wickets but was expensive with the ball and was punished for too many short balls. Impressive half century kept Aussies in contest but fell at a crucial stage.

ALEX CAREY — 6

Took two sharp catches down the leg side but spilt a chance up to the stumps off du Plessis which proved hugely costly. Was composed with the bat but asking rate eventually told.

GLENN MAXWELL — 6

Had no luck with the ball, with du Plessis dropped by Carey and then Miller’s LBW controversially overturned. Good cameo with bat but walked to the crease with side needing 11 runs an over

PAT CUMMINS — 3

Not the quick’s greatest day. Took 0-67 from his 10 overs, of which 46 runs came in boundaries — mostly at the death.

MITCHELL STARC — 6

Started brilliantly with the early wicket of Quinton de Kock and returned to snare Aiden Markram straight after the first drinks break, but copped the treatment like his teammates late.

ADAM ZAMPA — 4

Only used for six overs but was economical enough other than being blasted over the rope twice by Miller slog sweeps.

JOSH HAZLEWOOD — 5

Like new ball partner Starc was economical early before feeling the full force of the Miller-du Plessis partnership. Had Miller caught on the fence in the final over.

SOUTH AFRICA

QUINTON DE KOCK — 3

Started badly when he played the first Mitchell Starc delivery onto his box, and couldn’t help but edge him an over later.

REEZA HENDRICKS — 3

Soaked up 26 balls for his 8, before he was strangled down the leg side by Stoinis.

AIDEN MARKRAM — 6

Again looked a million dollars, losing a ball on the road, but again was unable to convert.

FAF DU PLESSIS — 10

Arguably his finest ODI ton. Absolutely superb from one of Australia’s most feared foes.

DAVID MILLER — 10

Signature knock from one of the most dazzling white ball players in world cricket. South Africa’s big wildcard for next year’s World Cup.

HEINRICH KLAASEN — 5

Didn’t get a chance to make an impact on the game.

DWAINE PRETORIUS — 7

Broke the crucial partnership between Stoinis and Marsh, and then got the key wicket of Marsh at the death

DALE STEYN — 8

Another outstanding bowling performance from one of the best quicks of any era.

KAGISO RABADA — 8

Finished with three wickets to continue his penchant for haunting Australia.

LUNGI NGIDI — 6

Got Aaron Finch early which was a key blow but went for plenty of runs.

IMRAN TAHIR — 3

Not his happiest night and Australia went after him to get back into the contest.
