Player ratings: How every Indian fared in Perth

A sensational century from skipper Virat Kohli wasn’t enough to rescue India from a convincing loss to Australia in Perth.

See who starred and who flopped in the tough loss.

KL RAHUL – 1

Absolute horror of a Test, with scores of 2 and 0. Would’ve been in major danger of losing his spot to Prithvi Shaw, but the youngster has instead been ruled out of the series.

MURALI VIJAY – 3

Only narrowly outperformed his equally out-of-sorts opening partner, but still looks like a walking wicket. His biggest moment in the match came when he was caught up in the middle of the Paine-Kohli sledge-off and was asked “you can’t seriously like him as a bloke”.

CHETESHWAR PUJARA – 3

Knocked over for 24 and 4, Pujara came crashing back to earth after his Adelaide heroics. But Josh Hazlewood said India’s prized wicket was his, not Virat Kohli’s, so that’s worth something.

VIRAT KOHLI - 9

Lost the Test and his verbal battle with Tim Paine, but the self-proclaimed best player in the world was the clearest reason why India wasn’t rolled inside three days. His century – a sixth on Australian soil – on a nightmare pitch against a world-class attack was arguably his best ever. The bear has been poked, and Kohli looks as dangerous as ever. Beware.

AJINKYA RAHANE – 6

India’s best batsman outside of Kohli, Rahane joined his skipper in rescuing India’s first innings. Rahane took an aggressive approach from the word go and nearly swung the match back in India’s favour.

HANUMA VIHARI – 6

Looked good on a difficult pitch in both knocks, and was a valuable asset with the ball – taking two first-innings wickets. His delivery to dismiss Marcus Harris was arguably the most stunning of the match, having hit a crack and reared like a Curtly Ambrose bouncer.

RISHABH PANT – 5

India’s wicketkeeping motormouth was more subdued than in Adelaide, where he became a social media sensation for his chirping behind the stumps. Perth was a wicketkeeper’s nightmare, with uneven bounce appearing on day one, and Pant dropped a catch – but saved about 50 runs with his acrobatic leaps to prevent wild bouncers from going for boundaries.

UMESH YADAV – 3

Faces the axe after a lacklustre performance having been drafted in so India could field four quicks. That looks a regrettable decision, as India badly missed having a frontline spin option and Yadav finished with two wickets for the match.

ISHANT SHARMA – 6

Became embroiled in a fiery argument with teammate Ravindra Jadeja on day four that appeared to give an insight into the rising tensions in the Indian team, and seemed to save most of his hostility for his teammates. Overcame his no-ball woes to take 4-41 in the first innings but went into his shell as the match went on.

MOHAMMED SHAMI - 8

Toiled well without success in the first innings before erupting after lunch on day four with one of the most fearsome spells of the series as Australia lost 5-17 in a stunning collapse. Finished with a six-wicket haul to give India a half-chance of pulling off a miracle.

JASPRIT BUMRAH – 8

Has arguably been the bowler of the series, and again looked world class in Perth. Bowled serious heat and had Australia’s batsmen under enormous pressure, and finished with five wickets for the match. Has been exceptionally disciplined.
