NSW young gun Jack Edwards to captain his state’s men’s one-day team as Blues transition to new era

The NSW Blues have taken a big step into the future by granting some captaincy experience to one of their brightest all-round prospects. DANIEL CHERNY reports.

Have England found their Mitchell Starc?

Rising all-rounder Jack Edwards will captain the NSW men’s one-day team as the Blues look to transition towards a new era.

Edwards – who had an outstanding domestic season last summer culminating in him winning the Steve Waugh Medal for NSW men’s player of the year – replaces Moises Henriques in the one-day leadership role, although the veteran will retain the Sheffield Shield captaincy.

Henriques said he was supportive of the move.

“I think this is a great opportunity for Jack to continue to develop his leadership and help NSW cricket into the next phase of our proud history,” Henriques said.

“I think it’s perfect timing as he can develop his leadership, while playing in the same team with some already experienced leaders such as Daniel Hughes, Jackson Bird and Nic Maddinson.

“Jack’s shown tremendous leadership already and has a good knowledge and understanding of the game and people, for a young player. I’m excited to have a front-row seat as he takes the one-day team forward.”

Edwards, 24, was looking forward to leading the side in the competition beginning next month.

“It’s a tremendous honour to be given the captaincy of a team and a state that I love playing for,” Edwards said.

“I have been part of Cricket NSW Pathways and now the Blues for almost half my life and now I want to be able to lead the one-day team into the future.

“We have a really exciting mix of young guys that I have come through with and also the older guys who have been there throughout my career. It’s an exciting time for this team.

“I’m really grateful that Greg Shipperd and Moises have put this trust in me and given me this opportunity.”
