JAMES Sutherland had to rush to clear out his desk before Cricket Australia’s cultural review dropped like a ton of bricks on Monday.

And with good reason.

The walls of his office are about to be knocked down.

As a symbol of new chief executive Kevin Roberts’ pledge to provide the game with a fresh start, Roberts has decided against moving into the oversized office Sutherland has called home for the past 17 years.

Instead, the demolition men have been called in and Roberts will move into a smaller space in CA’s Jolimont building in Melbourne.

The drastic change is part of Roberts’ bid to enhance the workplace environment at CA.

“I’ve suggested to our people I won’t be moving into that office. We’ll be knocking the walls down and using that as a common area for our people,” Roberts confirmed.

“It’s partly out of respect for James and his 17-year tenure in that space, and partly out of a desire to really embrace and be open with our people.

“I won’t be going in there and we’ve put it out to our people to make suggestions as to what they’d like that space to be used for going forward because it’s a substantial space.”

Sutherland was already out the door when the cultural review which was damning of the cultural environment he oversaw for 17 years was handed down.

Roberts was seated in the front row of Chairman David Peever’s tense press conference at the MCG to face the music about the review, and the magnitude of the task ahead of him as the game’s hands-on leader was spelt out in no uncertain terms.

“One of my key points of focus is uniting our organisation across the playing aspects and the non-playing aspects,” Roberts told The Daily Telegraph in an interview two days before the review was made public.

“Just because our players aren’t based in the office doesn’t mean we can’t have really strong and united relationships across all aspects.

“I’m feeling really good about the current status of relationships and I’m excited about building those to a much stronger position going forward.”
