India is being exposed as a nation of sooks as the monumental meltdown happening in the subcontinent after Australia’s clutch Boxing Day Test win continues to rage.
After Test legend Sunil Gavaskar and the vice-president of the Indian cricket board whinged about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s crucial dismissal during India’s failed run chase, attention has now turned to Travis Head.
Head, who India should probably be calling father given how many times he’s dominated them in recent times, took the other most decisive wicket of the fifth day at the MCG when he lobbed up a pie Rishabh Pant couldn’t help gobbling.
The part-time Aussie off-spinner celebrated by dipping his spin finger in ice - a harmless celebration Pat Cummins explained after stumps.
But that hasn’t stopped former international Navjot Singh Sidhu - a veteran of 51 Tests - making a pelican of himself on social media.
Sidhu joined the attention seekers on X by demanding Head is sanctioned, presumably for the way he celebrated Pant’s dismissal.
“Travis Head’s obnoxious behaviour during the course of the Melbourne test doesn’t auger well for the gentleman’s game,” Sidhu wrote.
“(It) sets the worst possible example when there are kids, women, young and old watching the game.
“This caustic conduct did not insult an individual but a nation of 1.5 billion Indians.
“Stringent punishment that would serve a deterrent for the future generations needs to be slapped on him so that no one dares follow suit!!!”
With leaders like Sidhu - who after his cricket career became an elected politician in India - it was no surprise to see Indian fans jump on the bandwagon and bombard Head’s wife Jessica with abuse.
Jessica, who only last month celebrated the birth of the couple’s second child, saw her Instagram pummelled with hundreds of gross messages on Tuesday - most often pig emojis.
Pat Cummins’ wife Becky was also targeted.
It’s an ugly postscript to one of the greatest Test matches ever played. It was enjoyed by a record attendance for any game of cricket in Australia, with 373,591 going through the gates over five days.
“I don’t think we’ve ever witnessed something like that so, yeah, what a week to be involved in,” said Australia’s Head.
“It’s two bloody good teams going at it, and I felt like it ebbed and flowed throughout and it’s probably one of the best Test matches that I’ve been involved in.
“It’s just nice to come out with a win. It’s been a long five days.”
