Test opener Marcus Harris stood firm while seven batting partners fell around him on the way to his first century since he pounded an historic double-hundred last November.

Harris, who played in the final Test against India during the summer, was the lone Victorian batsman to pass 40 as he withstood the Queensland bowlers in conditions well in their favour.

No-one has scored more than Harris’s 10 Sheffield Shield hundreds in the past five years.

It was the sort of gutsy century which should ensure the left-hander, who was part of the Test squad which didn’t go to South Africa, remains a strong part of the national conversation.

Harris looked like he could have been in for a long wait when the rain came down and he was on 98.

But the delay was only short and he reached triple figures the first ball back after play resumed, notching his 15th first class hundred.

Harris last reached triple figures when he scored 239 in an epic, record-breaking 486-run stand with fellow Test batsman, Will Pucovski, when they opened for the Vics against South Australia last November.

The Vics were 7-212 when Will Sutherland was out, with Harris still going at 107 not out at Allan Border Field.
