Australia crushed in horror start to summer as South Africa cruise to victory

AUSTRALIA'S top order has again misfired in an ugly start to the international summer as South Africa dominated on lively Perth pitch to draw first blood in the best-of-three series.

AUSTRALIA'S top order has again misfired in an ugly start to the international summer as South Africa dominated on lively Perth pitch to draw first blood in the best-of-three series.

South Africa sealed the six wicket win with 124 balls remaining, having dominated from the opening overs - and outclassing Australia in all parts of the game.

Man of the match Dale Steyn set things in motion by snaring the scalps of Travis Head and D'Arcy Short - paving the way for his fellow fast bowlers to unleash on the hapless Australian batting.

Lungi Ngidi was also exceptional, finishing with 2-26 while Andile Phehlukwayo ripped the Australian middle order to pieces to finish with 3-33.

Australia's total of 152 was never going to be enough and despite a three-wicket effort from Marcus Stoinis, Australia were well and truly outplayed.

Quinton de Kock top-scored in South Africa's runchase, hitting 47 from 40, while Hendricks played a patient knock – scoring 44 from 74.

Aidan Markram also looked impressive adding 36 from 32.

And that is that. South Africa win by six wickets with 124 balls remaining, with David Miller hitting the winning runs with his first ball faced.

A truly crushing victory to draw first blood in the three-game series.

Their quicks set things up with a devastating display in the opening hour – Dale Steyn led the way with two early wickets. Ngidi was also extremely impressive, finishing with two wickets himself before Phehlukwayo ripped the Australian middle order to pieces with three wickets.

Klaasen is out driving, taking an edge to Finch at slip. Not a great shot but just reward for Stoinis who has toiled hard.

The Proteas No.3 is furious with himself after a very tidy knock, chopping on a wider delivery from Stoinis.

Stoinis has caused some headaches for the Proteas, mixing his pace up a bit.

Looks like this may have been a slower delivery and Markram just can't track it down, instead dragging it back onto his off stump.

He's angry. He wanted to see this through to the winning runs.

He's out for 36 from 32.

Heinrich Klaasen the next man in with South Africa EIGHT runs from victory.

Faf in no hurry, taking just two runs from Mitchell Starc's seventh over.

Starc's pace down a little bit – doesn't hit 140km once that over.

Maybe there are still some questions around his fitness, after he battled a hamstring strain during Australia's Test tour against Pakistan.

'Adelaide is going to be really important for Australia'

They're going to lose today, but Australia will have a week to turn things around with the second ODI in Adelaide on Friday.

"Adelaide is going to be really important for Australia. After getting towelled up today, it's going to be really important they bounce back," says Mark Waugh

"Not just for this series, but for the whole wellbeing of the whole camp."

They'll need to find form on all fronts. The batting was an enormous letdown, but Australia's much-vaunted pace attack also failed to make the dents you'd expect from it.

Rare spot of good news on horror day for Aussies

Joe Barton

This might be the only good news to come out of Perth for the Australian team today!

Fox Cricket's Neroli Meadows is reporting Shaun Marsh should be available for the second ODI on Friday.

Marsh had surgery on an abscess on his, erm, buttocks. But it's all gone to plan, apparently.

He has his detractors, but Marsh was among Australia's best ODI batsmen last summer. And Australia's batting could use some reinforcement after a shocking performance today…

The end is nigh: Proteas need 23 for victory

Joe Barton

Seven runs from that over leaves South Africa within touching distance of victory.

Worringly, four of them came to Markram, with Chris Lynn failing to get down to a fairly simple ball rolling alongside him.

Lynn's had shoulder problems in the past and has said that he won't dive around in the field.

At least he's sticking to his word!
