Justin Langer swamped with job offers as his stocks soar despite resignation as national coach

Justin Langer may take some time off after leaving hotel quarantine but what lies ahead for the former Aussie coach after that? See where he could land next.

The coach that Australian cricket didn’t want has been deluged with job offers both inside the game and from other sports.

Justin Langer is still a long way off deciding what his next move might be after he was brutally moved on by Cricket Australia, but the level of interest already shown in acquiring his services shows he is still very much a man in high demand.

The Test legend’s name has been dragged through the mud for the best part of 12 months during a regrettable saga which has taken an enormous personal toll on Langer and his family and prompted Australian captain Pat Cummins to admit the game must learn from the way things have been handled.

However, it does not seem to have affected Langer’s reputation in the wider sporting landscape, with the multitude of approaches he’s received over the past week understood to include cricket coaching jobs, roles in other high performance sports and television commentary positions.

“There’s a lot of interest in Justin’s availability from all around the world. We’ve received a lot of approaches inside and outside the game,” said Langer’s manager, James Henderson.

“I’m sure Justin Langer won’t be unemployed next summer.”

One organisation to already publicly indicate an interest in Langer, is the England Cricket Board who are headhunting a new head coach of their own.

Influential ECB administrator and former England captain Andrew Strauss has confirmed Langer is one person at front of mind to take over as national coach from the sacked Chris Silverwood.

Former England captains Michael Vaughan, Mike Atherton and Nasser Hussain have all declared Langer is the man to pick up the pieces after England’s Ashes crisis.

Atherton wrote a News Corp column this week arguing that the friction between Australia’s players and Langer should not turn England off signing him as their new coach.

“That England, at the point where they find themselves now, probably require that kind of heavy hand is one of the more intriguing aspects of the game of musical chairs affecting the coaching fraternity,” wrote Atherton.

Langer is due to leave hotel quarantine in Perth and return to his family for the first time since early September and may still be some time off turning his attention to what his future might hold.

The Weekend Australian reported that one job offer for Langer was to commentate for the host broadcaster on the upcoming Test tour of Pakistan.

Langer would be a highly sought-after commodity too for Australia’s two broadcasters Channel 7 and Fox Cricket, given his close relationship with their army of commentators and the unique insight he could provide on the current group.

However, Langer has always indicated that he sees himself as a career coach.

Usman Khawaja provided a strong reference for why other boards should consider Langer to rebuild their programs, as the former Test batsman did for Australia after the low point of Sandpapergate.

“He (Langer) brought humility back to the Australian team,” Khawaja said.

“I know what we played like before he was coach and I know what we played like when he was coach.”
