Jason Gillespie set to exit as South Australian coach

Jason Gillespie is expected to depart his position as South Australian coach with one year remaining on his contract after being strongly linked with a coaching vacancy in Pakistan.

Gillespie signed a two-year contract extension in late 2022 that took him until the end of the 2024-25 season.

It’s understood an announcement on Gillespie’s future is likely in the next few days.

It would follow the recent departure of long-time SACA cricket chief Tim Nielsen.

The SA and Australian great has led the Redbacks for four seasons but despite sporadic green shoots has been unable to guide SA to a domestic title. SA has the longest Sheffield Shield title drought, dating back to 1995-96.

SA finished second-bottom in this season’s Sheffield Shield and last in the One-Day Cup.

Former Test paceman Gillespie has in recent days been linked to a position with the Pakistan men’s team.

Gillespie is also in charge of the Adelaide Strikers’ Big Bash League side and it is unclear whether he would remain in that role.

He led the Strikers to a BBL title six years ago while the side made the finals this year.

The SACA was contacted on Thursday but declined to comment.

Gillespie declined to comment on the Pakistan link.

SA is meanwhile courting NSW’s Jason Sangha to bolster its batting stocks.

Gillespie’s exit follows that of Queensland and Brisbane Heat coach Wade Seccombe, and comes against uncertainty surrounding the future of Melbourne Renegades coach David Saker.
