Australia has been rocked by an escalating selection crisis, with Cameron Green the latest superstar in doubt for the first Test with concussion and Joe Burns miserably out of form.

Just three days after Will Pucovski was struck by a bouncer, Green is also facing the prospect of his dream Adelaide debut being shattered, after he copped a brutal hit to the head while bowling, which immediately ruled him out of the final tune-up game against India with “mild concussion”.

It’s almost incomprehensible that the two once-in-a-generation talents who have had Australian cricket buzzing this summer could both miss the Test due to head knocks, but that’s the very real possibility facing selectors just five days out from the series opener.

To make matters worse, embattled opener Burns made another duck for Australia A on Friday night which has made him almost unselectable, except for the fact Australia may still have no choice but to pick him if Pucovski and Green join David Warner as officially unavailable for Adelaide.

Fellow Australia A opener Marcus Harris made just 26, but given the circumstances he is now well in contention to play the first Test.

The key difference in the two concussion dramas, is that Friday night’s freakish blow was Green’s first ever concussion, while Pucovski is recovering from his ninth.

In one positive, Green was cleared of any physical injury after having the ball smoked back at him by India’s Jasprit Bumrah, striking him flush above the right eye, near his temple.

But he left the SCG and returned back to the team hotel, as selectors Trevor Hohns and George Bailey talked at length during the dinner break, as headaches conspire against them.

“Cameron sustained a mild concussion while bowling for Australia A against India at the SCG today,” CA team doctor Pip Inge said.

“This is Cameron’s first concussion. He has returned to the team hotel and will not play the remaining two days of the tour match.

“We will continue to monitor him and provide an update on his condition in due course.”

Green left the field immediately for an assessment after delivering the first ball of his seventh over, barely getting a finger in front of the return strike before it burst through to hit him flush.

India’s non-striker Mohammed Siraj immediately dashed to Green – as he lay on the ground – instead of running between the wickets, while umpire Gerard Abood signalled straight away for the Australia A team doctor to come to the pitch.

Green appeared in remarkably good shape as he walked unassisted from the field, but less than an hour later he was walking out the back of the SCG and into a parked car still dressed in his whites, as teammates checked on his welfare.

Sources spotted Green walking into a scanning facility near the SCG but CA said he has been cleared of any physical injury.

Australia A coach Matthew Mott confirmed Green had a genuine concussion.

“It’s a difficult one for him. It was a freakish accident,” Mott said on Fox Cricket. “I haven’t seen that in this format.

“He’s been cleared of fractures, which is great. We will monitor him over the next couple of days. He seemed OK. He doesn’t say a lot at the best of times. He was OK.

“It’s really disappointing and poor timing for him. He was flying after his 100 at Drummoyne and we were hoping for more big things.”

The 21-year-old all-round sensation was firming for a Test debut in Adelaide – partly because of Pucovski’s separate battles – but fans at the SCG and viewers on Fox Sports were rocked by a sense of deja vu just days after the shock concussion suffered by the Victorian.

“The two names on everybody’s lips around Australia were Pucovski and Green and they’ve both been hit on the head the last three days and both had to leave the field,” said Kerry O’Keeffe in commentary on Fox.

“Siraj (the non-striker) heard the thud on the temple. H’s a lucky boy.”

Fellow Fox commentator Brendon Julian was also shocked by the situation of another young star leaving the field.

“I can’t believe that. Pucovski and Green are two guys looking at the Adelaide Test match,” Julian said. “He looks pretty well right. He’s talking and chatting. Going off as a precaution. It was really well hit by Jasprit Bumrah, out of the middle of the bat.”

Green had earlier taken the key wicket of Shubman Gill in a further example of why there were calls for selectors to get him into Test side any way they could.

KOHLI SENSATIONALLY BRUSHES KEY PINK BALL HIT-OUT

Indian superstar Virat Kohli has brazenly burnt his precious chance at pink ball match practice for the only Test he will play this summer.

Kohli has only ever played one day-night Test in his career, and never one on Australian soil, but still he was happy to put his feet up at the SCG.

In a bizarre sight, The King was all dressed up in his whites but with nowhere to go – as he jogged laps of the ground before play and then snacked on yoghurt as his teammates dropped like flies in the middle.

There was some raised eyebrows at the SCG that Kohli wouldn’t want to take up the rare opportunity to face the unpredictable pink ball and pour everything possible into his preparation, particularly when his summer is a sprint not a marathon and he’s flying home for the birth of his child after the first Test under lights in Adelaide.

The jury was out on India’s decision to bench three of their batting superstars in Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and KL Rahul for the pink ball hitout, after the rest of those challenging for top order spots in Adelaide were skittled by Cameron Green and Australia A before the end of the first session.

Shielding Kohli could be interpreted either as confidence or naivety for the reigning series holders India, but Test captaincy great Allan Border backed the skipper’s decision to trust in his own preparation.

“He has played enough of that form of the game and he’s in pretty good touch. He’ll just get his preparation right and get to Adelaide and face enough in the nets,” Border said on Fox Cricket.

“He’s the skipper. Having been there myself on tour you tend to take an opportunity to take a break.

“He’ll be right. I wouldn’t worry too much about him. It’s about getting the rest of the order right.”
