Cricket World Cup: Shane Watson helps Glenn Maxwell in big-hitting all-rounder’s time of need

THE lengthy embrace shared between Glenn Maxwell and Shane Watson on Sunday night had nothing to do with Maxwell breaking through for his first hundred.

THE lengthy embrace shared between Glenn Maxwell and Shane Watson at the SCG on Sunday night had nothing to do with the man they call the Big Show finally breaking through for the first hundred of his career.

Maxwell has experienced some heartache in his personal life over the past couple of weeks, and it was Watson who was right there to support him.

Watson has been on the international circuit now for 15 years and has experienced ups and downs of his own in his personal life.

The 33-year-old has been there for Maxwell to counsel him on the difficulties of dealing with happenings in your private life when you are on the road and away from family and friends.

Maxwell appeared to wipe tears from his eyes as he finally lifted his head from Watson’s shoulder, and the celebration symbolised the special bond the pair have shared.

“It was a massive weight (off) and obviously having Watto out there,” said Maxwell.

“He’s been there for me over the past couple of weeks. It’s been a tough couple of weeks but he’s been there for me through thick and thin.

“I just shared a little special moment with him out there and hopefully it opens the floodgates a little bit and I can stop getting out in the 90s.

“It was a real special partnership that we could have together. It was just a lot of fun, enjoying each other’s success at the same time.”

Glenn Maxwell and Shane Watson were in superb form at the SCG.

Watson is often viewed as a polarising figure, but his support for Maxwell is the latest example of the personality he is behind the scenes.

Watson’s big night on Sunday with the bat saw him donate $2300 of his own money to finding a cure for Motor Neurone disease.

He’s pledged $200 for every four and $300 for every six and wicket he manages through the tournament.
