SHANE Warne has warned Darren Lehmann about rising above his station as coach and taking charge of Australian cricket when it should be the job of the captain.
The legendary leg-spinner was emphasising the achievements and importance of Michael Clarke as Australian skipper in a radio interview, but also questioned some of Lehmann’s behaviours as coach this summer.
Warne inferred that it was Lehmann and not interim skipper Steve Smith who called the controversial declaration during the Melbourne Test.

Speaking on radio 2GB show The All Rounders, Warne said Lehmann has complemented the brilliant captaincy of Clarke, but that Cricket Australia needed to be careful the coach doesn’t take over the balance of power.
“It was Michael Clarke who taught them how to win. Darren Lehmann has come in and put a bit of icing on the cake, he’s actually complemented Michael Clarke,” said Warne.
“He’s (Lehmann) got to be a little bit careful that he’s got to stop walking out on the MCG and declaring.
“He’s got to remember that’s the captain’s job not the coach’s job.
“Darren Lehmann understands the game of cricket. He’s a good man manager, and he’s got to remember what it was like when he played and what the coaches were like.
“The captain is in charge and it’s something Australian cricket has to look at it with the way they want to do things – who is in charge.”
Warne said Australian cricket should be welcoming Clarke back from injury with open arms.
