I was a cricket 'nuffy' as are our youngsters, but they are willing to learn as well as entertain

THE Australian Test team wants to play an aggressive style of cricket, entertain the fans, and showcase our skills to the Australian public day after day.

We want to win and we want results.

In South Africa during the week, a thrilling Test match against India ended in a draw.

I am not having a go at either team but that Test match deserved a result. We will chase results.

Darren Lehmann, with a red nose on Christrmas Day, says his players are sponges about cricket.

The senior players have really bought into what we are trying to achieve and taken it to a new level.

In terms of performances you could not ask for more from captain Michael Clarke and vice-captain Brad Haddin on the park.

But it is the contribution of senior players away from the field that has pleased me just as much.

In my era we had players like Allan Border and Steve Waugh handing out advice to youngsters, and in recent months we have seen the likes of Clarke, Haddin, Siddle, Johnson, Watson and Harris make contributions in this area and help the young guys develop their games.

I have sensed that players like David Warner and Steve Smith are growing within the team.

Younger guys feel more confident about speaking up at team meetings. That is what we want. It is not always the senior players that come up with good ideas. Sometimes you hear some excellent suggestions from younger players as well.

We have an open and honest appraisal of each other and there have been some great conversations about the game and we are all trying to become cricket nuffies.

When I was young, Border and David Hookes had some stern words with me about learning the game properly, growing up and finding a game that could be successful at all levels. They didn't doubt my passion for the game - I was a cricket nuffy - but I needed to hear those words.

Mark Taylor was similarly helpful. He once he said to me "you hit the ball too much in the air'' and it was something I went back and worked on.

So long as you are always talking to someone - even if it is a teammate no more senior than yourself - it just makes it easier to find a way through the challenges cricket deals you.

We want to get back to being the No.1 side in the world.

It won't happen overnight and it will involve not just the current players but others who follow and it is important we have senior players helping youngsters along the way.
