Glenn Maxwell wedding: Australian cricket star reveals why tour of Pakistan came off second best

Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell has opened up on why the upcoming tour of Pakistan has to play second fiddle as he and his wife-to-be prepare for a traditional Hindu wedding.

Glenn Maxwell has revealed he will have to increase security for his Hindu wedding in March after the invitation to the week-long festival was leaked online.

The batting superstar was alerted to the breach when an old IPL teammate he hadn’t spoken to in years contacted him to say he’d been sent multiple copies of Maxwell’s wedding invitation printed in the Tamil language.

Maxwell’s wife-to-be Vini Raman is of Indian descent and the couple will hold a traditional Hindu ceremony, which means multiple wedding events spanning about the length of a Test match.

The fact one of Australia’s biggest cricket superstars is marrying a south Indian girl is causing enormous excitement in the Tamil community not seen since Kamala Harris — whose mother is also Tamil and from Chennai — was sworn in as US Vice President.

Maxwell’s invite was shared on Twitter by actress Kasturi Shankar and the cricketing superstar admits the viral leak has caused him stress as the big day arrives with the Tamil-speaking world now aware of all the times and venue details in Melbourne.

“I had a bit of a worrying day the other day. I got sent a photo from one of my former IPL teammates who I hadn’t seen in a couple of years and he had been sent the Tamil wedding invite by a numerous amount of people,” Maxwell told Fox Cricket during Tuesday’s night’s T20 broadcast.

“So unfortunately that was making the rounds online. I think we’re going to have to increase security at our Hindu wedding.

“Check online. It’s everywhere. Look up Mawell wedding, it’ll be somewhere.”

Maxwell vowed to shave off his “Ricky Ponting 1995” inspired goatee before the big day – which is actually a big week, spanning from a ceremony on a Monday to a final ceremony the following Sunday.

Fox commentator Brett Lee – also well versed in Indian culture – described Maxwell’s wedding as a “Test match” not a T20.

“There’s three events during the week. Including two the week before. It’s a bit of a festival for my wedding this year,” said Maxwell.

The Australian batsman also opened up about his regret that his wedding will clash with the Test tour of Pakistan, which selectors were keen to take him on.

When Maxwell first told Cricket Australia of his wedding date there was a hole in the schedule, but at a later point the Pakistan tour was locked in – and after having the wedding postponed already due to COVID-19, the 33-year-old has decided to keep the date.

“Originally when I organised the dates with CA there was a two week gap where I could potentially have it, so when I sorted that out I was pretty happy I wasn’t going to be missing any series,” he said.

“Then it came to the contract meeting midway through last year and (CA) said this is the Pakistan series and I said, ‘well that’s obviously changed since the last conversation we had’… but happy wife, happy life.

“I know I was pretty hopeful to be on one of the Test tours this year and unfortunately with all the scheduling changes it (wedding) happened to fall during this one.”
