Smith stood at the wicket for some time after the umpire gave him out and appeared to gesture to the 12th man that he had missed the ball by some distance.

The breach, though minor, is an embarrassment for the former captain who was named man of the series after a brilliant return to cricket in the Ashes.

“I got given out, didn’t I? You are allowed to be disappointed at times,” Smith said after the incident. .

“I didn’t feel as though I hit it, but that happens and you’ve just got to move on.”
