In the space of five months Eddie McGuire has had to sit in the stands and watch as his team collapses in a heap to lose a Grand Final.
McGuire was knocked to the canvas when his beloved Collingwood Magpies kicked the opening five goals of the AFL Grand Final against West Coast.
Only to see them fall short in a historic finish as the Eagles soared to the classic win thanks to a masterful late goal from Dom Sheed.
“You come here with hope in your heart ... that’s what big time sport is all about,” McGuire said following the loss to the Eagles.
“If you put yourself out there you’re going to feel devastation at times.”
Now after getting back to his feet and feeling like a Grand Final win was within his grasp, he’s had his heart ripped out of his chest.
The Melbourne Stars were cruising towards a famous victory over their cross-town rival the Renegades, when disaster struck.
After their openers piled on 93 runs, the team sensationally lost 7-19 to go from having one hand on the trophy to their heads buried in their hands.
McGuire couldn’t hide his emotion as he sat in the stands watching the train wreck unfold and fans couldn’t help but have some fun at seeing the moment unfold for the second time in 139 days.

The pain of losing one Grand Final can stick with players and fans for years, losing two in less than six months could force most into hiding.
Thankfully for Eddie the AFL season is just around the corner so he’ll have plenty to occupy his mind.
But if Collingwood are to make their way into another Grand Final in 2019, the team may request their president not be sitting in the stands.
