Dean Jones, Michael Bevan and Andrew Symonds in line for one day trophy honour

Three of Australia’s ODI icons are in the race to have their name grace Cricket Australia’s domestic one day trophy.

'Oh No!' Ben Stokes' ridiculous stumping

The shortlist for the new name of the one-day cup is down to three Australian white-ball greats.

Iconic trio Dean Jones, Michael Bevan and Andrew Symonds are the remaining contenders to be honoured in the naming of the men’s domestic 50-over trophy.

The three players were chosen after Cricket Australia received more than 10,000 responses on its social media channels and more than 8000 votes in an online poll since announcing in August that the previously sponsored competition would be named after a former cricketer, inviting the public to be part of the naming process.

The decision will now rest in the hands of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame committee before a recommendation is made to the CA board. An announcement on the winning name will be made ahead of this season’s final.

All three men were World Cup winners, with Jones part of the 1987 side that claimed Australia’s first world title in one-day cricket, Bevan playing in 1999 and 2003 and Symonds involved in 2003 and 2007.

Each of the trio were in teams that won the domestic one-day competition, with Bevan a part of six title-winning sides, five with NSW and one with Tasmania.

CA’s criteria for the honour are:

“An elite record in the men’s one-day domestic competition, a top performer at international level for Australia in men’s one-day cricket and a player who is synonymous with the 50-over format – i.e. has had a major impact on the game, including through performance and inspiring evolution in the way the format is played.’

Jones and Symonds died in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

“Thank you to all cricket supporters who have taken the time to voice their support and share their opinions via social media and email,” said CA’s chief of cricket James Allsopp.

“The level of engagement across CA’s social channels and digital platforms clearly demonstrates the passion Australians have for our cricketing heroes at both domestic and international level.

“It is absolutely fitting that fan support has narrowed the shortlist to Michael Bevan, Dean Jones and Andrew Symonds and we know that whoever the trophy is named after in perpetuity will be thoroughly deserving of the honour.”

Hall of fame committee chair Peter King said he looked forward to putting forward a recommendation.

The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame committee is delighted to be adjudicating the player to be awarded the honour of having his name attached to the men’s one-day cup trophy,” King said.

“Australian cricket fans have done a fantastic job narrowing the shortlist down to three exceptional players.

“The ACHoF committee will consider and debate the outstanding records and achievements of the three players in the coming weeks before providing a recommendation to the CA board.”
