DARREN Lehmann has signed on to analyse the players he used to coach in their desperate fight for credibility this summer, after joining Macquarie Sports Radio.
The former Australian coach, who stood down in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal, has promised to share insights into the dressing room and the style and technique of individual players.
FORMER TEST STAR REVEALS MENTAL HEALTH BATTLE
Lehmann had a minor role on Channel 10’s Big Bash League coverage and will provide Macquarie instant star power as the network gears up to take on ABC and SEN in the competitive radio market.
Australia is facing enormous odds to restore pride without Steve Smith and David Warner, and Lehmann’s take on their fortunes and new direction will make for fascinating listening.
Just like the three players involved, Lehmann’s world was rocked by the stunning events in Cape Town and the past few months have been difficult and emotional.
Since his dramatic resignation, Lehmann has been on the guest-speaker circuit and has been helping advise young Cricket Australia academy players up in Brisbane, although that short-term contract will soon expire.
Lehmann has been humble and gracious in backing in his successor Justin Langer and has been vocal in his support for Tim Paine’s new-look Australian team on social media.
Australia may be unfamiliar with many of the new faces who might be blooded in the baggy green this summer, but Lehmann knows the next crop more intricately than anyone.
It’s unknown what Lehmann’s future might hold as a coach, but he had success prior taking over the reins for the national team at both BBL and IPL level. For now Lehmann will familiarise himself with a different vantage point from the commentary box.
“I’m excited to be joining Macquarie Radio’s Summer of Cricket and can’t wait to get started,” Lehmann said. “It’s a great team and we’re going to have a lot of fun.
“It’s an opportunity for me to share an insight into how the Australian team runs and the intricacies of each player.
“I love the game I played and coached and want to see it continue to grow.
“I love the players; always have and always will. Go Aussies!”
