Pat Cummins has expressed his gratitude to the Barmy Army, after the England supporter group played a beautiful tribute to the Australian captain’s seriously ill mother.
A trumpet player from the Barmy Army played a rendition of ‘Maria’ from West Side Story as a special tribute to Cummins’ mother who is in palliative care in Sydney, during England’s current Test match against New Zealand in Wellington.
Cummins, who flew home from India last week and will miss the third Test in Indore to be by his mother’s bedside, was blown away by the gesture.
“This is amazing The Barmy Army, thank you. Mum loved watching this and felt very touched,” Cummins wrote on twitter.

Comedian Andy Lee, one of Cummins’ close friends, tweeted back “top shelf” among a throng of other positive feedback about the classy gesture.
The Barmy Army have a somewhat notorious reputation when it comes to heckling Australian players, but in a simple but thoughtful gesture, they showed what heart they have.
To give Cummins’ and his mother an uplift at such a difficult time for the family was all class.
As fierce as the Ashes rivalry might be, it’s just a game and there is great respect between England and Australia, reflected so touchingly by the Barmy Army.
Steve Smith will captain Australia in the third Test starting on Wednesday against India.
