She may have shocked her cricketing mates and retired midway through the Commonwealth Games but West Indies star Deandra Dottin has reaffirmed her commitment to play for the Adelaide Strikers this WBBL season.

The West Indies all-rounder, who represented Barbados at the Birmingham Games, blamed a negative team environment for her bombshell decision and said: “The current climate and team environment has been non-conducive to my ability to thrive and reignite my passion.”

However, Dottin — whose 38-ball century against South Africa remains the fastest hundred in women’s T20 Internationals — has confirmed she will run out for the Strikers this upcoming season.

Dottin contacted the club to reassure them of her commitment and said: “The Strikers are a brilliant team and I hope I can help them take that extra step and bring home the title. I can’t wait to meet all the fans and put on a show for everyone with my new teammates.”

It follows South African Laura Wolvaardt — who arguably possesses one of the most beautiful cover drives in women’s cricket — re-signing with the Strikers and you can expect her to keep scoreboard attendants busy.

Speaking from Birmingham during South Africa’s Commonwealth Games campaign, she said: “I love playing for Adelaide and am so happy that I will return this year. We were so close to the title last year and I know that as a team, we can take that next step this season.

“The fans around Australia love the WBBL and support us so well, I am really excited to see everyone again and hopefully put together a strong season.”

Meanwhile, it is expected the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder will announce the key re-signings of their respective captains and newly minted Commonwealth Games gold medallists — Ellyse Perry and Rachael Haynes this week.

With less than 75 days to go until WBBL08, and following the completion of Birmingham’s Commonwealth Games, all clubs are preparing to drop big name player announcements in the next two weeks.

The Strikers haven’t had it all their own way, they lose top quick and club stalwart Sarah Coyte to the Melbourne Renegades.

Coyte has played six of the seven WBBL seasons to date with the Strikers and sits seventh among the leading WBBL wicket takers of all time with 93 in 91 games, making her likely to pass the century milestone for both wickets and games played during this season.

And in a win for fans, all clubs will play home matches during the season for the first time in three years.

Not since the WBBL05 season have all clubs hosted matches in their own markets – but this season 14 metro and regional venues will play host to the WBBL, which begins Thursday, October 13.

All 59 matches will be played on Foxtel and Kayo.

This includes a new Thursday night slot, with a total of 17 matches in prime time, the most in the competition’s history.

Also WBBL08 will not clash with any of Australia’s games in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
