Canada Global T20: David Warner bowled by Lasith Malinga for 1 in first game since ball-tampering saga
FOLLOWING Steve Smith’s half century the day before in the Canadian Twenty20 League, it was an anti-climax to see David Warner’s stay at the crease over in just two balls. But it wasn’t all bad news.
DAVID Warner’s comeback to cricket lasted just two balls with the bat, but he finished with four catches and a run-out to still leave a mark.
MENTAL STRENGTH: Warner has what it takes to succeed
STEVE SMITH: ‘It hurt I couldn’t go out and help them’
Following Steve Smith’s confidence-boosting half century the day before in the Canadian Twenty20 League, it was an anti-climax to see Warner’s stay at the crease over in the space of about five minutes after he copped a belter from Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga that kept low.
But in the end Warner still found a way to feel the wind through his air once more.
Warner’s Winnipeg Hawks team romped to a powerful victory led by fellow Aussie Ben McDermott’s powerhouse 50.
Warner ended up taking four catches, including an overhead stunner that showcased his trademark athleticism in the field.
He bettered that at the death with a diving classic on the boundary fence.
Having not faced a ball in three months in the wake of his ball tampering ban, Warner copped an absolute peach from Malinga - a let down to the crowd had there been anyone there.
Warner nudged one away to the leg-side to get off the mark against good mate Peter Siddle.
But Malinga’s trademark slingshot style has lost none of its unpredictability and speed, blasting through Warner’s stumps with his very first ball.
Warner has plenty of chances to make big runs on a small ground in Canada, but would have loved to break the shackles as Smith did with a tournament-opening score.
