Cameron Green scores century and continues to be most talked about cricketer not in Aussie Test team

The hype is real about Cameron Green who put his name right in calculations for the first Test against India this summer after putting the reigning Sheffield Shield-winning bowling attack to the sword.

Measure Cameron Green up for a baggy green cap, he could be wearing one as soon as December.

The “it boy” of Aussie cricket put the reigning Sheffield Shield winning bowling attack to the sword with his fourth first-class hundred in his 17th match to add to the ammunition for those pushing his national worth.

He finished day three of the clash with NSW unbeaten on 185, just five innings after scoring 158 not out late last summer, an innings which elevated the hype around the 21-year-old which shows so signs of abating.

Green is banging harder than anyone on the door national coach Justin Langer wants smashed in by any players wanting to earn a call-up to his Test team which he said before the Shield competition was “settled”.

The all-rounder, who isn’t yet bowling as he manages back issues, knocked out three centuries for WA last summer as a 20-year-old to set tongues, finishing with 699 runs at 63.54.

While national selector Trevor Hohns said that Green needed to return to bowling to earn his baggy green, his weight of runs makes him appeal as a specialist batsman.

“They threw everything at him out there. Nathan Lyon bowling a lot of overs at him, the best spinner in the world, and he had a really solid plan for everyone he faced,” teammate Ashton Agar said of Green.

“And even talking to him out in the middle, he was really calm and composed. Whenever he does get the opportunity at the next level, I think hell certainly be ready.

“Nothing seems to faze him too much, for him to go out and get another big hundred again, is pretty special. I just hope we don’t put too much pressure on him. I think he’s going to be an absolute superstar.”

Test spinner Nathan Lyon, who bowled a lot of his 40 overs at Green, couldn’t help but be impressed.

“He was very, very impressive. Very clear in his plans, played spin very well, or slow bowling,” Lyon said.

“Even under pressure he looked quite calm and clear. You have to give credit where it’s due.”

Green’s effort was, however, the 11th century scored in the opening two rounds of the Shield as runs flowed across two grounds with Victoria yet to start its season.

The flat track at Park 25 in Adelaide, on which Green’s WA teammate Sam Whiteman also scored a century on Wednesday, as did NSW all-rounder Moises Henriques the day before, no doubt provided a welcome canvas on which to work.

Only 13 wickets have fallen across three days, with 879 runs scored in a match headed nowhere other than an early day four draw with WA yet to close it’s first innings, still seven runs behind NSW, and only a day to go.

Nathan Lyon had a tough day bowling on a flat track.

But Green, who batted for nearly the entire day, still had to defy the likes Lyon, Trent Copeland and Sean Abott, all first up for the summer, for a mammoth 378 balls to carve out an innings which heaped pressure on those middle-order Test players who maybe don’t feel quite as secure as they once did.

Lyon recovered from an early scare, hurting his shoulder while attempting a run out, which required attention from the team physio, to bowl 40 overs in his first hitout for the summer.

It took until his 28th over, but Lyon snared his opening wicket and finished with 2-112 on a pitch which played in to the hands of the batsmen.
