KFC SuperCoach Plus article: Josh Philippe is on fire but serious POD opportunities loom

Josh Philippe is at 72.6 per cent ownership in KFC SuperCoach — and for good reason given recent performances. But now is the time to zig while others zag.

KFC SuperCoach BBL: Jordan Silk wins Play of the Round

KFC SuperCoaches face a huge decision on Josh Philippe.

At the time of writing, he has scored the most points of any KFC SuperCoach player this year and is therefore owned by almost three-quarters of all players.

This type of ownership means just one thing for those who like to mix SuperCoach with adrenaline sports — PODs.

And there are some seriously good alternatives (more below).

Guthrie comes from the clouds

A bazillion words were written in pre-season about the best cheapies. The likes of Josh Kann, Daniel Hughes and Aaron Finch were heavily fancied. But plenty forgot Brisbane’s Liam Guthrie. He went large in the opening round double with 80 before missing round two due to the bye. Then he banged out another 57 for the Heat in round three and is now predicted to rise another $20,000. Well done to the six per cent with the intestinal fortitude to firstly get on, and secondly stay on over the bye.

Speaking of cheapies ...

Matt Gilkes was very popular in pre-season and for good reason. The mail was spot on with Gilkes scoring a No. 3 spot at the Thunder following the retirement of Callum Ferguson and Usman Khawaja’s call-up to the Test squad. He has produced some solid form and his price is now on the verge of $100,000. However, with just seven points in round three the rises will soon stop and it could be time to cash in.

Time for a Hales Mary?

Alex Hales was the top run scorer in BBL last year with 543 at 39, striking at 162 (not a mis-print). He therefore started KFC SuperCoach BBL at a barely-touchable $183,900. But after three relative failures, he’s now set to drop to around $100,000 for round four. Tempting.

Sure on Renshaw

Matt Renshaw averages 137 KFC SuperCoach points at the SCG. The Strikers play there in round four and he is likely back from Australia A duty. He also costs just $67,400 and was one of the most popular cheapies in pre-season before being selected for Australia A and therefore missing the opening rounds. If you’re looking to cash in a peaked cheapie, Renshaw is the man.

Fire up for Scorcher

It’s all about the Scorchers in round four given they have the double. Colin Munro will no doubt be popular after huge 154 last round. That said, he scored 150+ once last year too, before scoring more than 37 just once in the next six games.

Marsh mellow

Arguably the in-form player in Australia cricket, Mitch Marsh is back for the Scorchers on Tuesday night. At $132,700 he’s a real bargain when you compare current form to last season’s BBL form. He is also a decent chance to bowl for the Scorchers, which he didn’t do much of last season. Likely the most purchased player for the round four double.

Time to flip Philippe

Josh Philippe is at 72.6 per cent ownership. That’s the highest ownership I’ve seen in KFC SuperCoach ... EVER. Across all of AFL, NRL and BBL. Yes, he’s no doubt been brilliant and plenty of KFC SuperCoaches have seemingly locked him in for the season given the Sixers have no byes for the rest of the year. Fair enough. But of course, this type of ownership means just one thing for those who like to mix their SuperCoach with adrenaline sports — POD. Which leads us to our next point ...

Inglis Sale

Speaking of Philippe replacements ... Josh Inglis is back for the Scorchers tonight after Australian duty. He also has the double in round four. He also averages 91.25 against his next opponent Hobart. He is also considered, by Australian selectors at least, a better player than Philippe. He is also around $70,000 cheaper than Phillipe, yet currently owned by six per cent of teams compared to almost 73 per cent. Inglis is a serious POD ... but so is the next player on this list.

Wade aid

Let’s face it, if Wade didn’t hit his iconic 41 in 17 balls against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup semi-final, Australia wouldn’t be sitting pretty as world champions. He then continued his international form in the BBL with 45 and 128 SuperCoach points in the opening two rounds. With the double coming in round six, he’s a serious looming alternative to Philippe. Inglis in round four, Wade in round six. That’s the plan.
