Shane Warne predicts five spinners who will star in BBL10

No one knows spin bowling like the spin king Shane Warne. These are the five spinners the legendary leg-spinner has tipped to dominate KFC SuperCoach — and BBL10.

If anyone is well placed to predict the spinners who will dominate the Big Bash League, it’s Shane Warne.

The legendary leg-spinner knows the art of spin bowling as well as anyone and is excited by the depth of tweaking talent signed on for BBL10.

Adam Zampa will be available for most — if not all — of the tournament, while international stars such as Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Zahir Khan have inked deals.

These are the five spinners Warney is expecting to have a huge say this summer, including a couple of KFC SuperCoach specials.

Adam Zampa has become one of the best T20 spinners in the world.

Adam Zampa (Melbourne Stars) $184,100 BWL

The sixth-ranked T20-bowler in the world, Zampa has become a key weapon for Aussie skipper Aaron Finch. Stars captain Glenn Maxwell must be salivating at having Zampa available for the full tournament after he snared 20 wickets in 12 games last season. Melbourne Stars open BBL10 with a KFC SuperCoach BBL double and most teams will be loading up with Zampa alongside Marcus Stoinis and Maxwell. After the success the leg-spinner enjoyed in the T20 series against India, he might even be a captaincy option.

WARNEY SAYS: “It’s good to see so many good spinners. There’s all sorts of variety … Adam Zampa, (he’s) doing fantastically well for Australia.”

Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers) $192,300 BWL

Rashid has been the premier bowler in the BBL for the past three seasons and his consistency might be his greatest weapon. The Afghan international has snared 19, 19 and 18 wickets in the past three seasons and that consistency has translated to KFC SuperCoach BBL. Khan averaged 67.2 last season after posting 70.6 points a game in BBL08 and is almost guaranteed to be one of the leading scorers of BBL10. Coaches will be clamouring to get him in for Round 2 after Adelaide Strikers open their campaign with a bye.

WARNEY SAYS: “If you’ve got a blank canvas and you want to pick one player, Rashid Khan is always the first person named in any T20 team.”

Ashton Agar is well-priced for his potential KFC SuperCoach output.

Ashton Agar (Perth Scorchers) $102,700 BAT-BWL

It’s a shame Agar is injured and will miss the start of the BBL as his performance when recalled to the Australian squad suggested he could be a major player in BBL10. Agar took 2-44 and made 28 against India but injured his calf in the same game and did not feature in the T20 series. He was also withdrawn from the Australia A squad to play a tour match against India. The Scorchers don’t have an early KFC SuperCoach double so you can wait for Agar’s return and then assess whether you have enough trades — he’s cheap for his potential output after a below-par BBL09.

WARNEY SAYS: “Bowls very, very well. Can bowl in the power play and through the middle, so he’s a very good option.”

No spinner has more wickets in BBL history than Cameron Boyce.

Cameron Boyce (Melbourne Renegades) $121,400 BWL

The leading spinner in BBL history with 79 wickets, Boyce continues to be an important but largely unheralded contributor for the Renegades. He averaged a wicket a game in BBL09, taking 14 in 14 appearances despite the Renegades’ struggles. He’s considerably cheaper than many of the other top spinners in KFC SuperCoach — although the Renegades don’t play twice in a round until Round 6. If you’re going to start with Boyce, who averaged 42.4 points in BBL09, you’re effectively picking him until then.

WARNEY SAYS: “I think he’s the leading wicket-taker (among spin bowlers) in Big Bash history. Does a very good job and a pretty underrated spinner.”

Zahir Khan made an impression with Brisbane Heat in his first BBL campaign.

Zahir Khan (Melbourne Stars) $129,900 BWL

If only Zahir wasn’t in quarantine for Melbourne Stars’ Round 1 double. The left-arm spinner got a taste of the BBL last season, spending the first half of the campaign with Brisbane Heat. He took eight wickets in eight games for the Heat and managed an impressive economy rate of 6.58. Only his compatriot Mujeeb Ur Rahman (6.16) conceded less runs an over on average than Zahir for the Heat. He’s going to form a dangerous partnership with Adam Zampa. It’s a matter of when to target him in KFC SuperCoach as the Stars don’t have another double until Round 10.

WARNEY SAYS: “Doesn’t speak much English, so many people won’t understand what he says. But they won’t understand his bowling either because of its mystery, so watch out for Zahir Khan.”
