Melbourne Renegades secure first victory of BBL09
Things went from bad to worse for the Sydney Thunder, with skipper Callum Ferguson removed in the unluckiest way imaginable.
The Melbourne Renegades have finally secured their first BBL victory of the season in a rain-affected match against the Sydney Thunder in Canberra.
Some late fireworks from Alex Ross gave the hosts a sniff, but the Thunder never fully recovered from their horror start in the Powerplay.
The Renegades won the toss and posted 4/172 from their 20 overs. Shaun Marsh and Marcus Harris put on a 49-run opening stand after some slopping fielding, with Nathan McAndrew dropping a sitter.

Harris wasn’t given a second reprieve and got stumped by Jay Lenton off Liam Bowe (2/23) in the seventh over for 22.
Beau Webster later thumped a towering second-ball six that bounced off the Bradman Stand roof and onto Canberra Avenue, but was soon removed for eight.
Sam Harper brought up his half-century with a contentious six off Chris Morris (1/40) in the final over but was dismissed LBW the next ball.

In response, the Thunder lost three wickets in the Powerplay, with star opening batsman Usman Khawaja dismissed for a fourth-ball duck.
Skipper Callum Ferguson was run out in bizarre fashion, short of his ground after a deflection off Andrew Fekete's arm hit the non-striker's stumps.
A rain delay reduced the target to 135 from 14 overs, but only Ross could put up a fight in the run chase.

The 27-year-old struck five boundaries off one over from Mohammad Nabi, before he was eventually removed for 51 by veteran all rounder Dan Christian (3/14).
The Thunder eventually lost by 12 runs on DLS, and remain in sixth spot on the BBL ladder.
