James Pattinson's five-fa embarrasses hapless Strikers

All the talk was about AB de Villiers leading into today's Big Bash fixture, but a Test paceman has stolen the show with a ferocious five-wicket haul.

The Brisbane Heat have comfortably defeated the Adelaide Strikers in a one-sided encounter at the Gabba on Tuesday afternoon.

All eyes were on the Heat's latest debutant - cricket legend and T20 superstar AB de Villiers. Replacing English import Tom Banton, de Villiers showed his experience during a patient innings of 40, as the hosts comfortably chased down 111.

Matt Renshaw scored an unbeaten half century, guiding the Heat to victory with almost five overs to spare, his fifty coming off 45 balls

Earlier, Heat paceman James Pattinson claimed 5/33 from four overs, the fourth best figures by a Heat bowler in BBL history.

It was also comfortably Pattinson's best figures in T20 cricket, and his only five-wicket haul in the shortest format.

The Victorian paceman becomes the 12th cricketer to achieve a five-fa in nine years of BBL cricket.

To secure the Michelle, Pattinson removed Jono Wells after he chipped a catch to de Villiers at short cover, who takes his maiden BBL catch on debut.

Incredibly, Pattinson's four wickets during the Powerplay were all caught by Heat wicket keeper Jimmy Peirson.

Peirson made BBL history by claiming five dismissals during the first innings at the Gabba. Only one other player has achieved the feat – Tom Triffitt took five catches for the Scorchers against the Renegades in BBL02.

The Strikers never fully recovered from their poor start to the innings, eventually all out for 110 in the 19th over.

Ben Cutting claimed two wickets in three balls to close out the innings. All rounder Rashid Khan top scored for the Strikers, with 28. No other batsman managed 15 runs in the innings.

The run chase started poorly, with Heat skipper Chris Lynn making his way back to the pavilion for a first-ball duck. Lynn looked to crunch Michael Neser back down the ground, but could only find Phillip Salt at mid on, who held onto a smart catch low to his left.

Khan then bamboozled opener Max Bryant, the batsman clean bowled after playing all around a beautiful wrong un.

The Brisbane crowd loudly greeted their latest import to the crease, and South African de Villiers got his innings off to the perfect start, driving firmy through the covers for an elegant boundary.

Strikers spinner removed the T20 superstar later in the run chase, his first wicket of the tournament.
