10 commandments of SuperCoach BBL

The SuperCoach gods have spoken. These are the 10 commandments thou shalt follow if you are to ascend to the top of your league.

SuperCoach BBL: Shane Warne's Best Young Guns

1. Note double game rounds

Double game rounds are the key to SuperCoach BBL success. Check the fixture and if a team plays twice in the next round, load your side with as many players from that team as possible and ensure your captain comes from that team. It gives you two cracks at getting maximum points from your skipper.

2. Don’t miss lockout

The quick turnaround between SuperCoach BBL rounds can catch even the most seasoned coach out. Several rounds this summer will finish late at night and you’ll only have 12 hours to trade before the next round starts and lockout takes effect.

Load up on all-rounders like (L-R) Dan Christian, Marcus Stoinis and D'Arcy Short.

3. Avoid batsmen

Callum Ferguson was the top-ranked BAT in BBL SuperCoach last season at 24th overall. Choose all-rounders such as D’Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis and Dan Christian as batsmen because bowlers are a more likely source of points.

4. Know the international schedule

There are a host of English internationals signed with BBL franchises this summer, however their availability could be limited by a tour of South Africa. Australia plays a Test series against New Zealand and has a one-day tour of India scheduled during the BBL.

5. Know the scoring system

Take advantage of the economy rate bonus available to bowlers by choosing players with a proven record such as Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Similarly, buy batsmen who score quickly because they are rewarded for their strike rate. Only five players with deals for BBL09 have a strike rate above 150, headed by Josh Philippe.

6. Don’t underestimate the importance of your bench

You need to build your bank from the first round to ensure you have as many big guns as possible in every double game week. The quickest way to make money is by nailing the rookies who play and have low break evens.

7. Use the captain loophole

Chris Lynn will be a popular captain in Round 1 because he has a double game.

The fixture won’t allow it every round, but savvy coaches take the opportunity to have two hits gaining maximum points from their captain, who scores double. If you have your vice-captain on a player in the first game of the round and they fail, you can deploy your C on a player who features later in the round.

8. Do your homework, but be wary

While past success against a particular opponent or at a certain venue can be a strong pointer to SuperCoach selection, it is not foolproof. There’s few sports worldwide which can be as fickle as T20 cricket.

9. Make the BOM your friend

If a match is likely to be washed out, you need to know about it. Check the Bureau of Meteorology before making your trades as you’ll miss out on valuable points if a match is rained off midway through.

10. Load your team with all-rounders

There are few things SuperCoach BBL coaches rue more than choosing a batsman who falls cheaply. If that player is also capable of contributing with the ball, it can solve a huge headache. The top-three players last season were listed as BAT-BWL – D’Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis and Dan Christian.
