Australian captain Alyssa Healy has undergone surgery on her hand after a “domestic accident” at her home on Saturday evening, the Sydney Sixers announced in a statement.

But Thunder and Australian young gun Phoebe Litchfield revealed on Fox Sports’ The Blast the incident was “a pretty vicious dog attack”.

“I actually didn’t know until I turned up today, so I hope she’s OK. It just sounded like a pretty vicious dog attack, and I don’t know if this is public, so, yeah,” she said.

“Just a lacerated finger I’m pretty sure, so hopefully she’s alright and gets all the help she needs. So yeah, not sure to the extent of the injury but hope she gets better.”

Healy’s return date has not been announced, putting the 33-year-old under an injury cloud for December’s multi-format tour of India.

“I had a few chats with Midge last night; a couple of the girls have been in touch with her,” Sixers captain Ellyse Perry told reporters on Sunday evening.

“She’s had a big day and she’s recovering. She certainly knows that the whole group’s thoughts are with her.

“We’ll hopefully get to see her in the next little bit, and give her a big hug.

“It was a very freak accident, I guess. I’m not across what it was. It was something at home.

“We’re just sending lost of thoughts and best wishes to her, because she’s going to have a recovery period. It would have been a really awful situation.”

The wicketkeeper had been removed from the Sixers’ squad for Sunday evening’s WBBL clash against cross-town rivals the Sydney Thunder at North Sydney Oval.

“No further details of the accident or injury are clear at this time, with further details to be communicated in due course,” the Sixers confirmed.

A return date has not been announced, putting Healy in doubt for December’s multi-format tour of India.

Healy later posted an image of her heavily bandaged to Instagram, captioning the post: “Appreciate all the love. Am at home watching the girls get it done.

“Side note – if anyone knows how to do a hair tie one-handed, let me know.”

Meanwhile, Sixers batter Mathilda Carmichael has been ruled out of the Sydney derby after suffering a back strain during a training session on Saturday, while bowler Gabby Sutcliffe is still unavailable for selection.

The Sixers got their WBBL campaign underway on Thursday with a two-run loss to the Melbourne Stars at North Sydney Oval, with Healy scoring 10 (10) during the unsuccessful run chase.

The Sixers could have used Healy as well.

Chasing 191 after Phoebe Litchfield took the score to 5/190 with 54 not out off 28 balls, including two sixes off the final two balls, the Sixers were in deep trouble at 4/57 off 7.4 overs with the likes of Suzie Bates, Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner already back in the pavillion.

While they threatened to give the total a shake at several points, no players could go on with it for the Sixers, ultimately losing by 42-runs.

Earlier, Litchfield capitalised after a 98-run stand for the first wicket after Tahlia Wilson (33 off 29 balls) and Chamari Athapaththu (52 off 39) got the Thunder off to a perfect start.
