IT was a victory that will live long in the memory, not least because of two very special performances. CHECK OUT OUR PLAYER RATINGS FOR THE THIRD TEST TRIUMPH.

CAMERON BANCROFT: 5

His first home town Test innings (25) was not memorable but he did absorb 55 balls to at least take some shine off the ball. Is quietly learning his craft without shooting the lights out.

DAVID WARNER: 4

Apart from his robust second innings in Brisbane hasn’t set the world on fire this series and England have generally contained him to manageable levels. Scored 22 in Australia’s only innings.

USMAN KHAWAJA: 7

Scored an important 50, gave a few chances and the impression he hasn’t quite found his groove although not far away.

STEVE SMITH: 10

Epic 239 to shape the match, drive England to drink (again), and define him as Australia’s best since Bradman.

SHAUN MARSH: 5

Looked solid enough for his first innings 28 and it came as a surprise to see him lost his wicket. Has done well this series.

MITCHELL MARSH: 9

His epic 181 featured the type of dam-busting stroke-play he has always been capable off but has rarely been seen at this level. Greater challenges will arrive with seaming, swinging conditions but the confidence boost that comes with this innings should not be underestimated.

TIM PAINE: 7

Performing strongly. Batting was supposed to be his short suit yet a solid 49 not out was as impressive as his soft-handed work behind the stumps.

MITCHELL STARC: 8

Got things moving for Australia with four wickets in the first innings and five for the match despite a nagging heel injury. Has been the most dominant bowler of the series.

PAT CUMMINS: 7

Hasn’t got the rewards his high quality work has deserved this series so was good to see him get the last wicket. Took four wickets for the match, a solid reward but it could easily have been more. Again batted splendidly. Great cricket smarts for a player yet to play his 20th first class match.

JOSH HAZLEWOOD: 8.5

Combines class and steadiness to be Australia’s Mr Reliable. His five wicket second innings haul was a fitting sign off to Test cricket at a ground renowned for fast bowling. Match figures of 8-140 on a deck on which Australia made their highest home Ashes score was outstanding.

NATHAN LYON: 6.5

His three wickets for the match came after England were more bold against him. He did not threaten in the way he did in Brisbane and Adelaide but continued his torment of Moeen Ali and picked up Joe Root in the second innings.
