Australia beat the West Indies despite another superb innings from Hayley Matthews

Batting sensation Hayley Matthews again starred for the West Indies but this time it wasn’t enough to get the better of Australia.

DRS blunder prompts farcical scenes in WPL

Australia survived an onslaught from star opener Hayley Matthews to beat the West Indies by 47 runs on Thursday night at Allan Border Field and secure a 2-1 T20 women’s international series win over the tourists.

Matthews, who scored a magnificent 132 runs from 64 balls on Monday night at North Sydney Oval to inspire her side to a seven-wicket win and send the series to a deciding match, again seemed on course to derail the Australians in Brisbane despite being hampered by a leg injury.

However, having blasted her way to 79 from only 40 balls in pursuit of Australia’s 20-over total of 9-190, Matthews was dismissed in the 11th over of the West Indies innings with the score at 97.

Darcie Brown secured the vital wicket with a slower ball that deceived Matthews, who skied her attempted drive to be caught in the covers by Phoebe Litchfield.

The dismissal of Matthews – who scored a total 310 runs over the three match series, including an unbeaten 99 in her side’s game one loss in Sydney – was the beginning of the end for the West Indies.

They quickly slumped to 5-104 in the 13th over and never recovered, being bowled out for 143 in the 20th over.

Brown was the pick of Australia’s bowlers, taking 3-20 from four overs.

Earlier, Tahlia McGrath top-scored for the hosts – who had been sent into bat – with 65 from a 34-ball innings that included 11 fours and two sixes.

McGrath’s knock was complemented by solid contributions from Ellyse Perry (40 from 30 balls) and Litchfield (36 from 17 balls).

Shamilia Connell took 3-25 from three overs to be the best of the West Indies bowlers.

Australian captain Alyssa Healy said her side was rewarded for a “good approach”.

“We’re excited to get the win,” Healy said.

“We finally got a couple of wickets. We got them all tonight so that was a great effort from the girls.

“The batting group seems to be going really well and the bowlers have been threatening, and tonight was a great example of their adaptability.

“We came with a good approach and we got the job done.”

Player-of-the-series Matthews said as captain of her side, she wanted to “lead by example and really inspire” the West Indies team.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get over the line tonight but for the other girls, I just want to continue to see them grow,” Matthews said.

“That last 10 overs when we were batting we crumbled and fell apart.”
