Aussie player ratings v India at SCG: No stand-out but plenty of class from Short, Stoinis, Starc, Zampa
Ben McDermott won’t look back on Australia’s six-wicket defeat to India at the SCG with too many fond memories. The method of his dismissal for a golden duck certainly showed he has plenty to learn.
India won the third and final Twenty20 cricket international against Australia to tie the series 1-1 after Friday’s second match in Melbourne was washed out.
Australia won the toss and made 6-164 but India passed their total with two balls to spare and six wickets in hand.
Here’s how Julian Linden rated the Aussie’s effort at the SCG:
D’ARCY SHORT – 6
Got the innings off to a flyer with a quickfire 33 off 29 balls that featured five boundaries only to miss an attempted sweep off Krunal Pandya and fall lbw when a bigger scored beckoned.
AARON FINCH – 5
Made his highest score of the series with a crisp 28 off 23 balls then threw it away when he top edged a sweep off Kuldeep Yadav to Pandya at short fine leg.

GLENN MAXWELL - 5
Was given a let off courtesy off the DRS when he was wrongly given out lbw on 4 but failed to capitalise on his second chance, holing out to long on when he had made 13. Bowled tightly and got the wicket of Lokesh Rahul.
BEN MCDERMOTT - 1
Played the dumbest shot of the match. After watching Finch and Short both lose their wickets to spinners off sweep shots, he tried to execute the same stroke but missed the ball and was sent packing lbw for a golden duck. Only gets a point for his fielding.
ALEX CAREY – 5
Another one who squandered an opportunity to make a bigger score. He smacked four fours in his 27 off 18 deliveries but gift wrapped Pandya his third scalp when he was caught in the deep of yet another senseless sweep. Took a nice catch behind the stumps to get rid of Rishabh Pant for a duck.
CHRIS LYNN – 4
Ran himself out at the non-striker’s end for 13. A bit unlucky but only has himself to blame.
MARCUS STOINIS – 6
Bashed an unbeaten 25 off just 15 balls when he came to the middle with only 4.1 overs left and Australia desperately needing runs from the tail. Bowled one horrible over which went for 22 runs so was pulled from the attack.
NATHAN COULTER-NILE – 5
Hit a really valuable 13 not out off seven cherries when he came in as the last man. Didn’t take any wickets in his three overs that cost 40 runs but took a neat catch to send Rahul on his way.
MITCHELL STARC – 6
Played his first international in two years. Didn’t get a bat but was the pick of the bowlers, taking 1-26 from his four overs. Made the initial breakthrough when he struck Shikhar Dhawan on the pads for 41.
AJ TYE – 5
Didn’t get to swing the bat but bowled reasonably well, though he leaked 32 runs from 3.2 overs. Picked up the wicket of Pant with his first ball of the match.
ADAM ZAMPA – 6
Along with Starc, he was Australia’s most effective bowler, finishing with respectable figures of 1-22. He picked up a big wicket when he bowled for Rohit Sharma for 23 but that was his one and only scalp.
