‘Absolute rubbish’: Sam Konstas hammered for ‘embarrassing’ act

Sam Konstas has gone from a relatively unknown prospect to a household name this summer but his latest act has not gone down well.

Sam Konstas' attack at all costs approach sensationally backfires

Australian cricket sensation Sam Konstas has come under fire for a truly bizarre performance for NSW in the Sheffield Shield.

As selectors begin to mull over who should open the batting for Australia’s World Test Championship Final at Lord’s in June, Konstas did himself no favours.

Konstas, at his best, walks into the team. But after an incredible one-day hundred for NSW against Queensland at the Gabba, the teenager failed miserably on Tuesday as he showed blatant disregard for the value of his wicket.

After pulling out an audacious reverse ramp shot on the second ball of the innings against Test teammate Scott Boland at the SCG, many would have thought he couldn’t have tried any more outrageous shots.

But they were wrong.

After edging through slips on ball one, Konstas ramped on ball two, before advancing down the wicket and slapping a ball through the off-side for four in the first three balls of the innings.

That was followed up by him missing a scoop shot, whiffing on a flick off his pads and finishing with a drive for no runs.

That was all in just the first over of play.

But his egregious attempt to slog sweep Boland over the legside by exposing all three stumps on the next ball he faced, left cricket fans with their heads in their hands.

With an enormous step outside off, Konstas’ wild swing saw him clean bowled.

It was a shot that even in T20 cricket would have led to the coach giving an almighty lecture.

And recklessly giving away your wicket in such a manner is a way to ensure you don’t get picked in the Australian Test team.

Boland was shocked himself, puzzled by Konstas’ plan to take him to all parts of the ground, especially with the new ball swinging.

And Aussie fans were quick to lay into Konstas, calling for a drastic change in his batting approach moving forward.

“Embarrassing. What a joke of an innings,” one person wrote on X after Konstas was dismissed.

“Sam Konstas … what absolute rubbish. Who is telling this bloke that this is how you play Test cricket?” another added.

“Not a fan, kid continues to just throw away his wicket, selectors would be fools to include him in any sides higher than grade cricket atm,” a third wrote.
