AUSSIE cricket icon and larrikin Doug Walters has revealed he has not had a cigarette for five years after being convinced to have laser treatment by golfing legend Jack Newton.
Walters, who puffed on more than 50 cigarettes a day for most of his life, talks about how he has gone cold turkey on tonight’s episode of Cricket Legends on Fox Sports.

Walters features on the second of a 12-part series hosted by leading cricket journalist Robert Craddock.
“I am a good friend of Jack Newton’s, we were in A-grade at drinking and smoking and most days we would be into it at the golf club,’’ Walters says.
“Jack had this laser treatment and I thought that it was interesting he had been off the smokes.
“I told him to get the Doc to give me a ring, I wouldn’t mind going to have a look at the treatment he had.
“I had the treatment and I am laying there on the couch and this lady was doing all this stuff and I was thinking I wish she would hurry up so I could get downstairs to have a smoke.
“I had my smokes in my pocket but I got downstairs and I didn’t feel like a cigarette.
“I thought I’d wait until I got home and I got home and I didn’t feel like one, so I thought I’d have one the next day.
“I have waited over five and a half years and I still haven’t felt like one.’’
Walters, now 69, was the kid from country NSW who played 74 Tests and scored 5357 runs at 48 between 1965 and 1981.
He says giving up smoking turned out to be one of his greatest achievements.
“For a lot of my life if I slept in and went to bed very early I was down to 50 (cigarettes a day),’’ Walters says.
“I climbed up a little bit higher than 50 on most occasions
‘”I am still alive so I must feel better for giving up smoking.’’
